Iceeu2: Not yet, still wading slowly through the BI Revealed book before reviewing the Kauai one (read it prior to the last trip).
Am thinking that place Kal likes to stay (forgot the name, but I'm sure I've got it in the multitude of 'saved' links here somewhere). If not there, possibly split a few days on the North/South shores which had been my initial preference before reading Kal's raves!
Where will you be staying?...I definitely want to check out that jewelry...you know me and (inexpensive) jewelry!
I'm thinking we'll do BI 1st followed by Kauai...is there any particular reason to do otherwise?

I haven't decided for sure but I'm leaning towards the Bancroft Builders rental in Wainiha:

It's more expensive, but it's beachfront and the owners don't seem to have a problem with a 2-night stay.
(The short stay is the #1 problem I've run into in finding a rental, which is understandable. When I originally laid out my itinerary, I had planned to spend those nights on the North Shore at Hanalei Bay Resort or someplace similar.)
The owner at Auntie's seemed willing to work with me in our first email exchange, but she hasn't gotten back to me after I sent her a few more questions about the property.

I guess I should explain what I am looking for in case someone has a better recommendation for me! 
This is my husband and I's first real trip to Hawaii (not counting a 1-day layover in Maui in 2000 en route to the Philippines). We will be traveling in mid-September and our itinerary includes a couple of days on Big Island (to see the volcano), 4 days in Lihue, and our last 2 nights on the North Shore. I want something romantic - as in somewhat secluded, great views, proximity to beach for walks, picnics, or relaxing with a glass of wine and toes in the sand - but I don't need fancy. Also important is location... I wanted to be reasonably close to Ke'e beach and the snorkeling and hiking there, as well as to dining options in Hanalei.
I originally looked at Hanalei Bay Resort, then decided that Hanalei Colony Resort was more what I was looking for. From reviews I've read, I thought could get more for my money by going with a vacation rental. So here I am.

iamg, - Thanks! I actually found that place too but unfortunately they are booked for my dates except for their Cottage 5 which is too big for our needs (and nearly as expensive as Hanalei Colony Resort).
I am also considering the Kobayashi family beach houses that are in Hanalei:

That's the same property that has the Hanalei Moon, right? We stayed down the street last summer and I walked by there every morning on my daily walk. The nice thing about that property is it's location right on the beach. I love that beach. The sand is fine and packs down, which makes it perfect for walking. Staying in Hanalei was great. There on the bay it is very peaceful and quiet, but it is just a short walk to town for drinks, eats and people watching.

Bill - Yep, same location as the Hanalei Moon Beach Cottage. Thanks for the review! I'll have to keep that in mind.

I'm not Bill, but I can answer your last question. We spent two weeks in Hanalei last month. That location at the end of Weke road is very good and quiet. The thing about Hanalei bay is that it's this great beach and setting without hundreds of people.

Agree with Pilates. We were there in July and August and the beach (which is almost 2 miles long) never had more than 50 people on it. It is my FAVORITE spot on that island!

I've heard they may change the name to Islander on the Sea??
AND.....my little birdie told me the Sand Bar is scheduled to reopen the first weekend in August.[-o< [-o< "KNOCK KOA"!!!! =D>

Thanks, Kal I thought so, but couldn't find my bookmark of you TR. I printed out info of that place yesterday. The website says they are all condos now. Any special hints on specific ones to recommend?

You've got me rethinking Hanalei vs. Wainiha. I'll have to see if the Kobayashi cottage is still available (it's been a couple of weeks since I inquired) and go from there.

Bill - I'm still trying to decide. I think the ambiance seems a little nicer (more secluded, not sharing a lot with 3 other houses) at the Wainiha rental, but the location of the Kobayashi rental seems perfect. The prices are comparable, and my husband doesn't seem to have an opinion. I'm torn. 
(And I'm spending way too much time making this decision... it's only 2 nights out of a 10-day trip!)
