August Temps in New York

Just what is the weather like in New York in August. I've heard terms like "the footpaths melt". Is it really that hot??

Well I am sure you have heard the term
"the Dog days of August", that pretty much describes the weather in August, hot muggy with frequent thundershowers, but that is the weather in much of the east in August.

The nice thing about the city is Manhattan is an island so we do get some cooler breezes from the rivers and the harbour. Also there are things you can do to keep cool, like the beach, or cruises (the World Yacht, dinner cruises) or the circle line or even the Staten Island Ferry (is a free trip)

Everything is air conditioned including the buses and subway and even the taxis have to have AC now.

Hope this helps some. Have a great trip.

Thanks Tweedy

Where I come from summers are often 100+ and muggy. I was expecting a far worse forecast than what you've given. I'm sure I'll cope. And thanks for the "keeping cool" suggestions.

Alex, it's more likely to be a maximum of high 80s and low 90s. Though we do reach the century, it's only on rare occasions.

add 30 degrees if and when you ride the subway!
