Thanks everyone. Sorry to get off track.

Yes this is a "retirement quest" visit, but we are not naive enough to think one or several visits will decide a place for us.

Nor are we naive enough to think there is a "perfect" place. There isn't.

Asheville kept popping up on our lists, and it seems like a really interesting place, so we thought we'd visit.

Of course for anyplace we like we would visit again and again, dig deeper into stats, talk to the locals, rent there for a long while, etc. For now we just want to see Asheville to get a feel for it. My sense is that it will be too large for us, but if nothing else, I know we will have fun seeing a beautiful part of the state/country. We will definitely take time to see some of the smaller towns around Asheville also.

We are aware all places have their problems. Where we live has lots of them though not on the crime side because it is so small (20K). Our prices are through the roof (@700K for a 3BR/2BA basic house) forcing out the long-time locals, icy, snowy, cold LONG winters (@ 6 months), and too much too fast growth. It is really the weather and cost of living that is driving us out.

Anyway, to get back to my original reason for this post, we have decided to stay at the Chestnut Street Inn. Thanks to whoever suggested that. Looks really nice, and the location looks good. Now it's on to restaurant choices and things to do on our short trip! We will only have 2 nights, but want to fit as much in as we can. Seems there is so much to see in the area!

We certainly have gotten a lot of people moving here in similar situations, i.e. tired of NE weather, taxes and cost of living or tired of FL, Gulf Coast hurricanes (we call these folks "halfbacks"). Waynesville, Hendersonville, and Brevard are larger towns but without the city feel of Asheville. They all seem to do a good job catering to the retirees. Black Mountain and Weaverville are much smaller towns.
You can find lots of restaurant recommendations on www.chowhound.com but if you let me know what you like I can try and give you some suggestions. For local news you'll find www.citizen-times.com for Asheville
