Art Galleries - quality and prices Maui

We would like to shop for at a few art galleries while on Maui. Where would the locals shop for art? I was thinking that in Lahinia & Wailea they would have higher prices just because of the tourist location.

We will not be going to Hana so suggestions for anywhere other than the east side of the island would be greatly appreciated.

Pa'ia? Mahawo? ??

I assume you mean Makawao? Both Makawao and Lahaina have many studios. In Makawao you will find glass and ceramics, along with Elan Vital's studio. In Pa`ia you will find lots of cheaper prints, but it sounds like you are looking for original art. Forget Wailea. I have a few favorite artists and if they have a studio, you will pay their asking price. Unless you know them personally and they feel very generous, you are paying their studio prices.

What kind of art interests you?

Here is a good website with a close to complete losting of galleries on the island

Mostly I think we would like some time of wall hanging. Original - Yes. Not sure if painting or not. Something interesting to remind us of our honeymoon.

How is the Friday Art Night in Lahania?

The Lahaina galleries carry serious $tuff, the Friday night session is fun and you could also see big cheques written. You will also be instantly analysed by professional snots as to whether you're worth any attention at all.
Nevertheless, there's good art to just view.
One place that's a bit different is further north, still on Front St tho' name has changed - and I've forgotten the new name, it's rock n'roll memorabilia including original drawings etc. Also a good place to visit daytime as their a/c is the best on the island so a good spot to cool off

I too would love to bring home a painting of some sort to remind us of our honeymoon.

Is it possible to get anything "original" without spending big bucks? Meaning under $200?

'66, yes, you should be able to find something. We bought some prints at the little gallery in Napili Plaza shopping center, put them in koa frames from Pictures Plus and they look great.
