Arizona vacation plans - sound doable to the travel experts?

Here is our "not-set-in-stone" plan for a week in the Sedona area. Polite, helpful comments invited!

Aug. 1 - Land in Phoenix at 10:30 a.m., trying to avoid having "Dry heat, my ass" be the first words out of my mouth!

Pick up rental car and drive to Flagstaff to attend some of the Native American Festival before heading to our 4 p.m. check-in in Sedona.

Aug. 2 - Relax in Sedona

Aug 3 - Head to Grand Canyon, maybe to see the sunrise, but more likely not that early, but get there mid-morning, spend the day and see the sunset.

Aug. 4 - Stay in the Sedona area, maybe visiting Slide Rock State Park and play in the water.

Aug. 5 - Drive to Monument Valley and do the 17-mile self-guided tour, then heading to Chinle to spend the night, possibly stopping at Hubbell's Trading.

Aug. 6 - Do the half-day tour of Canyon de Chelly (already reserved), then drive back to Sedona, going through the Petrified Forest, etc.

Aug. 7 - Once again relax in the Sedona area, with a trip to Red Rock State Park, or something similar

Aug. 8 - Head for Phoenix, stopping at Montezuma's Castle on the way, before a 11 p.m. flight home.

Any suggestions/comments/etc.?

I just realized that if we want to stop at Hubbell's, it would be back-tracking to do it on Aug. 5th.

why are you going to Flagstaff which is about 45 minutes past Sedona and with traffic could be very problematic and more time consuming then you realize..
Call the front desk and ask for an early check-in and stay in Sedona..maybe head to Jerome on the way from PHX to Sedona..great old mining town but can be done in an hour or two..have lunch at the Asylum at the Jerome Grand Hotel.
Phoenix is a dry heat but you are going in August which is typically monsoon season so it will be very muggy and the intense rain is something you need to apprise yourself..you can get caught in torrential downpours that strand tourists every year in the washes and low points in the road.
Where are you staying in Sedona?

We're renting a house in the Oak Creek area.

Jerome sounds like a possibility. Would traffic to Flagstaff on a Saturday morning/early afternoon be a major problem?

Will the home be ready by noon or a little later?
Highway 17 going north can get really trafficky with everyone escaping the heat from PHX.
Jerome is cool and you can take the back side down through Cottonwood.
Make sure you have lunch at Enchantment resort at Yavapai..make reservations..there is a guard out front and dinner at Elote Cafe..both excellent choices.
Stunning red rock at Yavapai and the drive and the hike in Boynton canyon is great.
we like doing the vortex tours..
have fun!

Yes, do Hubbell's Trading Post on August 6.

The half day Canyon de Chelly trip.....we did that in the spring when it wasn't that hot out...but I'll bet your's will be calling your experince the "Shake and Bake tour". That's what I've heard it called in the summer.
