Arizona in summer -- are we crazy?

We are thinking of Arizona in August (the Boulders in Carefree, and Enchantment in Sedona). I've never experienced a desert summer... will it be too hot to enjoy hiking and other outside activities? Any info or opinions would be appreciated!

My iife and I have been to Scottsdale in the summer...and it's hot...but more tolerable that the weather in Wahington DC where we are.

Sedona will be cooler, because of the altitude. The Boulders is an incredible place..you will love it.

We hiked....but went out very early in the morning and brought plenty of water.

You have picked beautiful places. The settings for Enchantment and The Boulders are absolutely incredible...you will love them.

We have been to Arizona several times, all in early or late October. It was around 105 degrees in Phoenix some days, and humidity or not, that is hot! Sedona will be cooler but in August, probably will still be pretty warm. In our experience, late October is a perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities, it is in the 90s in Phoenix and the 80s in Sedona, very nice in the evenings. Whatever you decide, take lots of water when hiking, you'll be glad you did.

Having been there many times in the Spring, I would never go in the summer. Sorry to "rain on your parade" but I think you should reconsider.

Visiting Carefree in the summer time and wanting to enjoy outdoor activities will likely require you to rearaange your time schedule. Early morning hikes are the best. If you play golf, unless you have a real aversion to heat, or have a particular health problem, playing in the midday sun is not a problem (considering you'll be riding around in a covered cart and will be playing on cool grass). Early evening outings very popular too. So...the afternoon is a goodtime to catch on some lost sleep from your early morning outings. Again, the desert is a beautiful location and considering that 2 million+ people live nearby, I wouldn't be too afraid of it.
To some people, the summer heat would not be an enjoyable vacation... so you'll need to know how you will react to it.
Sedona will be cooler and in August you may run into afternoon thunderstorms which cool things off even more. If you want to get out of the heat, you can drive up oak creek canyon and be in pine country. Finally, there are beautiful hikes in and around Boynton canyon where the Enchantment resort is located. Both hotels you mention are really outstanding.
