Arches Rock Scrambling for Kids
I just read a post suggesting canyoneering in Moab. It sounds like so much fun. Our flatland children love to scramble over rocks at any opportunity - are there any particular hikes at Arches or Canyonlands that would be good for them? The two 5 year old boys in our group will be too young for the often recommended Fiery Furnace hike and too young for canyoneering I think. I would love to be able to find another great adventure for them. We leave Friday. Thanks in advance for any advice.

cbbi,
There are plenty of rocks everywhere for your boys to climb. Just remember not to let them go too high! They don't call it "slickrock" for nothing. It's very easy to go up, getting down is another story all together! Tiny grains of sand on the rock can make them slippery. Be sure to keep you eye on them at all times.

Check out www.deserthighlights.com for canyoneering. They have a lot of pics with kids canyoneering. I don't know their age limits. If they are old enough, they could do the rappelling with a safety line attaches. They use the safety line on most of the rappels anyway. Don't miss the huge area of red sand for them to slide down just outside the park right on the hwy. There is no charge, and you just pull up for an impromptu adventure. There is usually some cars there and the kids jus tumble down the huge hill.

Thank you for the suggestions. We are in the car now enroute to our adventure! The red sand sounds like it will be great fun as do those hikes. There are so many choices of hikes and my little boy just loves to climb so thanks a lot for the tips!
