Anyone know Maine???

We are an English family travelling to New England at the end of June. We will be dropping off our daughter with her exchange student friend who lives near Portland, Maine. We then have a week to please ourselves what we do. We have no idea where to go! Please can anyone give us any advice about what area to stay in. If I can give you some ideas about what we like -
1. We love to walk and hike so somewhere scenically attractive would be great.
2. We can go up to 100 miles away from where our daughter is staying.
3. We would prefer to stay inland rather than on the coast.
4. We like peace and quiet so we can laze around, read etc. The latter part of our holiday will be spent in Florida, so this is the peaceful part!
5. We would like to be not too far away from restaurants, shops ec, but will obviously have a car.
Many thanks for any help!

With a few exceptions, the beauty of Maine is its coast. Any particular reason why you want to be inland?

Yes! We were fortunate enought to stay on the coast for a week last year and wanted to head inland to the mountains and lakes. We keep hearing about Moosehead Lake but it does look a little commercial. Do you know of it at all?

Moosehead Lake is gorgeous and definitely peaceful and quiet. We did not find it commercial compared to other areas. It's near Baxter State Park which should have hiking trails. You can also hitch a boat ride to an island and climb Mt Kineo. You can take "fly and hike" trips. Lile Bay State Park is nearby, with a quiet beach. Greenville, the main town, is very small and has little shopping and not much in the way of restaurants. We saw plenty of moose, too.

The Rangely Lakes area is what you are looking for.It is about 122 miles from Portland.A bit closer is the Belgrade Lakes region. The Kezar Lake area is also worth a look. All areas have good web .
