It gives booking codes and fare codes to take to your travel agent to get these fares. Anyone every use them? What kind of luck have you had

They're good at locating the lowest fares, but you often will find that by the time you can get it booked elsewhere, the fare has expired or sold out. As soon as you find your fare, you should call a travel agent, or the airline directly, and try to reserve it. If they give you a higher fare quote, you will need to give them the special booking codes to try to bring the fare down....but I've found that many reservationists just can't seem to find the codes and get the fare.

I use itasoftware.com to find the airfare and then go directly to SideStep.com to book the airfare.

I used to use SideStep also as it was a great way to compare flights, cars and hotels. Then I ran Spy Hunter for spyware and adware and an alert goes off telling me that SideStep was Spyware!! After that, I uninstalled it, but even after doing that, there were still traces of it in my registry and files! I don't know if I would mess with it again after that!

What is Spyware? I'm sort of web naive.

Well here's the strange thing:

Spy Sweeper and Ad Aware left SideStep alone. Spy Hunter, however picked it up as spyware.

I'm guessing this maybe because SideStep tracks what websites you go to, so that if any travel search is done, SideStep automatically pops up. Therefore, to Spy Hunter, ANY program that tracks your browsing habits is considered spyware.

I had sidestep installed for a while and also ran into problems with our computer operations at same time. When I called Gateway to clear up problems, they advised me to uninstall sidestep.

Note that fares on SideStep are nearly always a few dollars higher than the same flights on the same dates at the airline's website. Same with Expedia.

I much prefer to book directly with the airline. No point in involving an unnecessary third party.

In most cases the travel sites are no better than the airlines. Some people find one deal and from that point on they swear by the company. Few years ago I needed a one-way ticket to London from Tampa. I was able to find a GREAT deal on cheaptickets.com for a one-way on USAir that for whatever reason it was not coming up on USAir own site. I bought the ticket, no problems and I was very happy with the fare. For some time after I tried to be loyal to cheaptickets, but never, ever again were they able to beat airline direct fares. The point is that maybe on occasion you may find something better here or there, but don't assume that the site is ALWAYS the best. No such thing.
