There are several outlet malls in Northern CA, but I'd say the best, by far, are the Gilroy Premium Outlets http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=23. Gilroy is just south of San Jose and on the way to Monterey (if you take 101). It is the largest that I've been to and I think I've been to all the NoCal ones.

In Sonoma, the town or Petaluma to be specific, just off HWY 101 (exit at Old Redwood Hwy) is the Petaluma Premium Outlet.

This is not quite the size/scope of the the Gilroy outlets, but it has the basic apparel stores.

I like the Gilroy Outlets too which you could visit on the way down to Monterey.

There are also a number of outlets in the wine country. There is a large outlet center in Napa just off the highway (Tse, Barneys, Max Studio, BCBG, DKNY etc) and another small outlet mall just north of St Helena with some very upmarket shops including Coach and Escada.

Petaluma also has an outlet Mall with a fairly limited choice though it does include Bose and Off 5th (Saks).

Hope this helps!

I was hesitant in mentioning the Outlet at the city of Napa (off Hwy 29 exit at First Street). Lots of choices, designer and otherwise, but the OP didn't post anything about going to Napa.

The Gilroy outlets is probably your best bet. But if you do happen to venture north of S.F., the outlets in Vacaville (about an hour away) is good too.
