Notsure - as far as schools go, I can personally recommend The North Hills School in Irving (north). It is a charter school (i'm sure there may be some detractors), but it is one of the most successful charter schools in Texas. It is public, but private in that the school relies on fundraisers and annual fund drives to help with the operation of the school. We only get state money, no money comes from city/county taxes. It was founded in 1996 and my children have attended for 8 years (my youngest graduates this year). It will soon have a kindergarten class, and has consistently received exemplary ratings from the State of Texas. It consistently ranks much higher than the state's average in the standardized test scores. It is a small school (~950) in grades 1-12. It has an International Baccaleaurate Diploma program and a college preparatory education. Check out their website at www.tnhs.org.

I don't know if my two cents are too late but I'd like to put in a good word for Mansfield. It seems that Mansfield gets overlooked in your posts. I have lived in Mansfield for seven years and am about to close on a new home in Mansfield. I have lived in Arlington as well and have worked all over the metroplex. I really can't say anything negative about any of the cities you've mentioned because I have friends all over and each city has its own positives and negatives. I can tell you that I wouldn't want to live anywhere other than in the Dallas/Ft.Worth metroplex. I love it here. I don't mind the commutes, from Mansfield I can pretty much get anywhere within an hour tops. Mansfield does have high property taxes but I don't mind them considering the school district. I have been very happy with the Mansfield ISD. I'm sure there are probably some schools in Mansfield that aren't "the best" but the one my son attends is awesome. I really do love it here and don't plan to move anywhere else. It's close enough to entertainment but far enough that I don't feel crowded. I hope this helps. Good luck with your move.

In the DFW airport area (which is reasonably centrally located) suggest the Bedford/Colleyville area. If looking in the Colleyville area look at some of the older subdivisions for better value (Tara is one that comes to mind). Bedford, the ajoining community to the south, like Grapevine, the ajoining community to the north, is probably slightly less snobby.

If city services are a priority, AVOID BEDFORD! The residents there recently rolled back property taxes, and the city closed the Library, senior center, city pools, and seriously cut hours at the rec centers. Who knows when it will be fixed.

I have enjoyed reading all the replies posted here. I would love some input as well. We are considering relocating as well from Southern California. Eventually opening our own business so would only have to worry about commute for a year or so. Want to escape the HIGH cost of the OC. We have visited and love Flower Mound. We have young children so schools are very important, but so is neighborhood feel. I want to be around other families. We can easily spend $350-$400k but would much rather stay around the $300K range to allow some breathing room. We do like newer areas and nearby shops etc. Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated as there is so much to consider. I worry about leaving such perfect weather, but I think the trade off for not being a prisoner to your mortgage will balance all that out. We liked Flower Mound, Highland Village and Colleyville...please share any thoughts you may have. Thanks!

I drive through Lewisville, Highland Village and Flowermound on the way to gymnastics for my daughter. I find the area to be the ultimate in "soulless suburbs."

You're right about Bedford. They have major problems at City Hall.

Mansfield must have improved of late. I don't mean to trash your town, but whenever I think of Mansfield, I think of row after row of those autoparts graveyards.

Funny, I've never seen an autoparts graveyard in Mansfield. Guess it must be really different now.
