John, that is fascinating. It must be beautiful and dangerous to watch. They actually postponed the Pipeline Masters Tournament today due to high surf - that must have been painful for the surfers!

It also seems odd that beaches are closed on both the west (where the waves are coming from) and the east side of the islands...what's up with that?

WOW! I just saw some pix on Netscape. I would love to see those waves (from a safe distance, of course). I can't believe anyone would surf in them.

Here you go, Diana:

There's some sort of glitch, at first it would only give me two pics, but if you click on "next pic" then you will eventually get to scroll through about a dozen. Awesome.

Thanks Joan! Very neat. I think I'll stick to calm surf myself.

From today's Honolulu Advertiser:
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar...ln/photos.html

We watched the Kaua`i north shore surf from Princeville lookout yesterday morning. Absolutly awesome. Today's surf is down to "only 18 to 25 feet", but another swell is due here Friday, then another on Monday. As those monster waves hit the reef just off the Princeville Hotel area, we can hear the BOOMS at our house -- and the sea mist nearly obscures all the pali surrounding Hanalei Bay.

Hey Kal -- bring your board!!

Here's a weather/surf map which shows how the latest swell is hitting each island as it travels down the chain:

BuffaloGirl:
There were just a few hardy (crazy?) surfers out of Hanalei yesterday morning -- some being towed out to the surf line, a couple who had paddled out from the shore. I heard on the news last night that 2 surfers had to be rescued here; one other on Maui.

Yesterday I was tempted to play hooky from work so I would be able to see the surf on the North Shore - but in all reality, any time the surf is forecast for 18-20 feet, the traffic going that way is impossible. Imagine what it was like for a 50 foot forecast.

I saw on the news that you had to be out there before sunrise, just to be able to get parking. Some people camped out overnight - the Eddie Aikau Invitational probably added to that. Pictures I saw of the highway leading out there indicated it was one big parking lot.

So word of advice for anyone wanting to see the big surf (forecast at 18+ feet) - go really, really early.

Maybe Eddie would go, but the big boys stayed on Maui for hot tow-in action at Pe`ahi! Spent yesterday out at there. It was kind of dissapointing for many of them who were hoping for a prize-winning wave, but Friday should bring in another shot. Laird bailed out early when he saw that the waves were only hitting 30 feet. But many others, including at least two female teams, stayed the day getting in practice for that killer swell. This was already the third day this season that Jaws was running, and it's still only December. It's gonna be a good winter!

My husband and daughter drove out at noon yesterday to watch the waves...both at Lanis and Waimea Bay. They said it was just awesome. Lots of surfers were out, and they saw lots of breathtaking rides! I wish I'd gone!

Here 2day, Eddie was a surfer who died in 1978 trying to rescue his friends, so perhaps he was there (as was Laird Hamilton), but in spirit only...here's his story:

When I was in college, I learned that a 50-footer was a girl (or a car) who looked good from 50 feet away, but not so good up close.

When I clicked on this thread title, I halfway expected to find a story about a car or a woman.

Sorry for the unintentional sexist remarks - Mrs. Delay has trained me better over these years.

My daughter just called, they were on the north shore Oahu yesterday, she said it was a mob scene but awesome. They rode their bikes almost 20 miles to avoid taking cars into the gridlock. She said her whole body was stinging from the salt spray! One fo her friends from Kauai won $55K in the surf contest!

"Eddie Would Go" is the name of Eddie Aikau's biography and a popular slogan on bumberstickers and Quiksilver surfwear, hence my comment...."Maybe Eddie would go..." It was just a reference to the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Invitational at Waimea yesterday.

We got our daily "surf - porn" here today. A series of shots from Jaws and we got a pic from Bruce Irons. Looks fantastic. It's supposed to get pretty big down here in San Diego this weekend. Everyone in this office will be happy and relaxed come Monday. Especially since the boss will be in Tahiti surfing.

Saw this on a truck's bumper sticker in Ha`ena yesterday -- appropriate for yesterday's surf conditions, for sure!

Thanks Auntiemaria, for the link to the noaa map.

BobbiOh, do you have a link for the surf-porn, or is it private ? I love to look at surf pics, as does my Jersey old guy surfer husband...
