Another "first trip" itinerary question...
We have really enjoyed reading the posts on this site...repete, budgetqueen and others seem to have great experience and insight, so thanks for taking the time to answer yet another "first trip" question.
We are a couple with two teens, traveling also with "young" parents/grandparents (early 60s) for 6 total travelers.
We will be in Alaska 3 weeks from July 2 through 22 or 23rd. Plan to fly round-trip to Anchorage. This is our tentative break down and we know we need to be getting things finalized and reserved soon for the peak season travel.
First 5 days:
Anchorage to Denali by train with a stop in Talkeetna for flightseeing. Denali about 3 days, preferably in a more remote cabin in the park. Back to ANC.
Next 5 days:
Travel to Valdez (looks like we need to rent a car in ANC, don't see other options but didn't really want to ferry the car). ?Dinner cruise on PWS. Ferry to Cordova. Seems a little "off-the-beaten-path". 3 or 4 days in Cordova. Childs glacier, Copper river delta.
Last 10 days:
Rent RV from Great Alaska Holidays, in ANC. Spend next 10 days on KP including Seward, Northwest Kenaii Fjords cruise, then Homer for a few days.
Questions:
1) Is 10 days too long for KP?
2) Best places in that itinerary to bike or kayak?
3) What about Cordova? I've read a lot of great things but it seems rather difficult to get to (hence the "off-the-beaten-path"-ness...)
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

You are arriving just in time for the Forest Fair in Girdwood. Here's a link to some pictures http://www.girdwoodrealestate.com/sh...?pcategory=221
If you like crafts, music and food, this would be a fun start to your trip. You could either make this the start of your drive south and re-arrange your itinerary or insert it at the beginning. Girdwood is only 40 miles south of Anchorage. The real estate agency has a second set of photos which include the powered ultralight. The tram ride up Alyeska is wonderful. Since you have so much time, I would recommend an overnight in Girdwood. Others have recommended the hiking trails there.
Several communities have a big 4th of July parade. (A national magazine did a story on the one in Kodiak.) We went to the one in Kenai last summer. There is a major foot race up Mt Marathon in Seward on July 4th.
I think your time on the KP could easily expand to fill 10 days. You could explore more fully instead of just seeing the highlights. Hope is a very tiny town that would require a side trip. It is remarkably unchanged since it was built. It would be an opportunity to see original cabins and imagine how Alaska used to be. There is a small museum. You would also have time for a visit to Seldovia or another town that is only accessible by boat from Homer or plane.
Since you are traveling to Denali by train, you will miss Independence Mine in Hatchers Pass. Before you leave Alaska, you could add an overnight to the Palmer area and include a visit to Iditarod Headquarters. Old car and airplane buffs might enjoy a visit to the Museum of Transportation in Wasilla.

Since you ask- I think you are a little long in some areas?? Are you looking at staying in Kantishna?? Camp Denali gets raves but you are also going prime bug time- greatly impacts on my enjoyment so much so, you won't see me that far until the end of August. Frankly a car will offer you much more than the train on this portion- Anchorage- Denali Park. For a trip to Valdez- without a car- you could just take the regular run of the Alaska RR Anchorage- Whittier leaving about 10am then getting the ferry to Valdez. Again a car is more beneficial especially lugging luggage etc and the drive out of Valdez up the Richardson is a very sceneic drive. Again my opinion only- 10 days is too long on the Kenai Peninsula. As another thought??? have you considered a one way cruise Seward-Vancouver?? This offers the excellent opportunity to see the Inside Passage and usually 3 great cities as well as a glacier sailing. It fits nicely with an interior tour and 3 weeks is plenty of time for both.

If you want a second idea, on how to travel to Valdez, e-mail me. I can give you an option that does not require the rental car over to whittier by ferry. I have lived in Alaska now for 28 years and can offer many suggestions if you need any furhter help.

Alaska swed not only lives in alaska but he is expending his business here by suggesting to contact him so he could offer some advise. I think he should take example from other posters who respond to many questions here do not have any business in mind.
Example: "I can give you an option that does not require the rental car over to whittier by ferry."
Why to contact him? If he is realy such a nice guy and try to help, I agree, he should post his suggestions here.
Why? So he can tell you the best way is to hire his company.
