My daughter is considering a college that's located in Annapolis (no, NOT the Naval Academy!). What sort of public transport access is there to get her back home to Boston? Is there a bus or train from Annapolis into Baltimore, where she can pick up Amtrak, or to BWI? Thanks.

Hi Suzy - well there's only one other school left and it's right next door. She would be about 20 minutes from BWI and most people use the shuttles that area available. She can also probably get a ride into Lanham (about 20-25) minutes away - it's close to Rt 50 and 95 on the DC beltway) and that's where Amtrak is and there may also be a station near BWI.

Annapolis is a great town - it's about 20 minutes to Baltimore and about 30 into Washington dC and most of us really like it. It's also about 2 hours from the beaches on the Md shore. There's a lot of young people here. The school she's considering is supposedly one of the best liberal arts colleges around.

There are a number of things unique to Annapolis and St. John's College. For instance, Annapolis is the only state capitol that has neither a train station nor a Greyhound bus depot. To get to Baltimore you've got to depend on a shuttle to BWI airport where you can pick up a train, or a city commuter bus.

Among the uniqueness of St. John's consider that it's one of America's oldest liberal arts colleges, diametrically different from the U. S. Naval Academy in teaching philosophy, curricula and testing. The only competitive athletic activity involvig the two schools is their annual croquet match which the Johnnies always seem to win, despite the fact that middies usually deck themselves out in whites and straw boaters while the Johnnies are garbed in whatever most closely resembles something clean in their wardrobes.

Annapolis is very unique - it is the only state capitol where three signers of the Declaration of Independence have homes still standing and available for tours. It's Main street is cobblestone from the wharf up to the circle. It has it's next door neighbor Eastport which tries to secede each year in battle. The young people at St Johns are always holding class outside on the lawn on beautiful days. If you decide to visit the school, plan on staying for at least 3-4 days. I can assure you that you'll enjoy it.

Declaration signers' homes are nice, but is there good pizza?

Good pizza - no, not really. For really good pizza you need to go to Old Forge PA (Revello's)

Best bet is to get a shuttle to the New Carrolton Metro station (just inside the beltway (95) at Route 50--about 15 miles from Annapolis), she can pick up Metro into DC for flights out of Washington National (DCA), or can pick up Amtrak for train service up the northeast corridor. Or, she can also shuttle up to BWI (about 20 miles) for flights, and rail-link to Penn Station in Baltimore, for Amtrak service.

Annapolis has started bus service to BWI airport. I do not know the details, but it has a few runs every day to/from the bus terminal.

Also- most colleges have commuter bulletin boards where you can request a ride. I went to school only three hours from home, but there was no bus service available and I didn't have a car. For the entire time I was there, I never had a problem finding someone who was going in that direction.

Plenty of people from St. John's will be heading out on holidays and weekends. She will undoubtedly find someone she knows who will drop her off at the train station in Baltimore in exchange for gas money!
