Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the great report. I am so excited as DH and I leave on Saturday for 3 nights in SF and 2 nights in Carmel to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

We are flying Virgin America for the first time and staying in a Bridge to Bridge room at the Mandarin.

Couple of questions:
1. We have dinner res at Gary Danko - what is the general dress/attire? Specifically wondering if my husband should wear jacket/tie?

2. What route did you drive from SF to Carmel?

Your photos are great!
(BTW, we are Giants fans)

Thanks again and hope your health continues to improve.

Hi fun4all4 - I'm not andrew8, but I was just at Gary Danko. My husband wore a nice shirt and sweater and slacks. We were there on a Sat night and most men were dressed similarly. I don't even recall seeing any jackets and ties that night.

Enjoy a great meal!

Hi Andrew...those are great pics! Rick and I have been to CA many, many times and he's been to Big Sur and Carmel, but I haven't. We are taking a side trip from Pebble Beach next Spring so I'm taking notes from your report. I'm glad you had fun and I hope your health improves.

Great pictures and trip report, Andrew8! Beautiful couple and fantastic pictures.....I especially liked the pictures of you kayaking. Inspires me to try it there some time. I now know all the great places to try out for a future trip to Carmel.

Thanks Fun4all4 !
You don't have to wear a jacket and tie for Danko. I ended up wearing one but you would be fine with a Sport Jacket and no tie.

If you have any questions about anything while your at the Mandarin, ask for Michael Dunlap who's the head concierge. He's not only a great concierge but a great person. My wife loves him.

The Mandarin actually gave us the directions for going to Carmel. We left around 10am and got to Katy's Place in Carmel at 11:45am. I don't think the coastal route is worth the extra time but that's just me.

In regards to your Bridge to Bridge room at the Mandarin. I like the rooms in the east tower better than those in the west tower as you can look out at the great views of Bay while lying in bed.

I wanted to add some must sees in Big Sur that we've done on prior trips to Big Sur:
Nepenthe

Partington Cove

Peiffer Beach

Visit the waterfall plunging into the beach at Julia Peiffer Burns State Park

Henry Miller Library

Driving south along the coast on Hwy 1 to Sand Dollar Beach and San Simeon.

Bill,
Peiffer Beach is the perfect place to see the sunset. We both feel it's beyond amazing.

I think the waterfall at Julia Pfieffer SP is one of prettiest places along the whole coast.

The sunset there must be lovely.

Carmel by the Sea has the best Jazz radio station I've ever heard in the United States. It's called KRML on 1410 AM and it's located next to the Hog's Breath Saloon.

The movie Play Misty for Me with Clint Eastwood is based on this radio station. Clint actually owns the station as he's a huge jazz lover.

Steelygirl and I actually enjoy
listening to KRML on our computers when were online.

andrew, I very much enjoyed your trip report. Isn't it amazing that we can connect with a place on such as level as you have with Big Sur? Yosemite always did that for me, although I haven't been there in years. Thank you for sharing.

andrew I'm going to try to find it online too. I remember seeing the film in the movies - it was very entertaining.

CP,
We're actually going out to San Francisco and staying at the Mandarin from December 10th to the 14th as we've always wanted to see San Francisco at Christmas. So far our dinner reservations are Cyrus on Friday and Spruce on Saturday. I actually just made the reservations yesterday.

Yes CP, we're driving back after dinner as it's an easy drive for us. We did it last New Year's Eve and it was a piece of cake. Plus we don't want to miss a night with that great Bay view at the Mandarin.

LCBoniti,
My wife and I can't wait to visit Yosemite some day. It's easy to see why you love it there. I could easily take a 1,000 photo's at Yosemite when I visit.
