American Folk Art Museum in NYC closing!

I was sad to hear on the radio this morning that the American Folk Art Museum in NYC is closing. It is right across the street from the Museum of Modern Art and apparently MOMA is buying the space. Figures on the purchase of the collection have not been disclosed. It isn't my first choice, but I always enjoyed going in when I wanted a more intimate, quieter museum experience. My favorites have been various representational painting exhibits, their permanent folk furniture, weathervane collection and also once an exhibit of carousel horses.

I'm sorry to hear this as well. It was a little jewel of a museum.

On investigation, however, the announcement is that the W. 53rd Street gallery is closing, but the museum will continue to operate out of the (smaller) original Lincoln Square venue, so hopefully the show will go on while they sort out their finances and facilities troubles.

Actually isn't it the opposite--the original was the 53rd ST. location, and they opened the Lincoln Center venue when the museum was being renovated. I LOVE American primitives so it was a favorite of ours. Thanks for the news.

It's sad to hear - but I must admit that whenever I was there it was almost deserted.

I thought it was the opposite too- but you're both right! Here's an excerpt of a letter on their website from the museum's president:
"...After a lengthy and thorough review of our situation...decided to sell our building in order to eliminate the bond debt entirely...The Museum of Modern Art, which has right of first refusal on the property, has agreed to acquire the building from us...We will reestablish our Lincoln Square space—which for more than twenty years has been a lively venue for the museum’s exhibitions and programs—as our home and primary base of operations."
I didn't see a timeline, the current exhibits at 53rd st show dates thru Oct. 2011.

nytraveler, A few times I was there it was surprisingly busy. I never made it to the Free Jazz nights, forget whether that was Thurs or fri
