Amelia Plantation on Amelia Island

My husband and I are thinking about staying at the Amelia Plantation in June. We love the ocean which is why we have chosen this resort. Any information on this resort would be great.
Also in reading other posts, many people recommend staying in the town of Amelia - we hadn't thought much about this option because we want to be close to the beach. But, I was wondering if downtown Amelia is indeed close to the beach, or right on the beach in some parts.

I appreciate any information you might have,
Thanks
Judy

I stayed at the Plantation a few years ago. We had a 2 br 2 ba condo directly on the beach. It was great. The unobstructed views of the beach and ocean are beautiful. A shared pool is outside or a short walk up the beach is the beach club with a bar and patio dining, and a large pool. The town of Fernadina is a 10 minute drive. They have quaint store and great restaurants. My son was 7 at the time and he loved it. He's 10 and has been to Disney 2 years in a row, but he says the Plantation was his best vacation. We'll go back soon.

We stayed at the Plantation last summer and really enjoyed it. We also had a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo with a gorgeous ocean view. We enjoyed the Plantation's pools -- the lovely shared pool at our condo complex as well as the larger pools/beach club. Would also recommend a trip to Little Talbot Island State Park -- a short drive from the Plantation -- for a great beach experience.

I will tell you that while we typically do stay at some kind of resort on a beach vacation, we are not "stay ON the resort" type people and always want to do a lot of exploring. Fernandina is a short drive away and to be honest, we were really underwhelmed by the town (a couple of good restaurants, though.) But we did enjoy the Plantation, and the beach was terrific.

If it is beach you want you'd be better served to stay over nearer Ft. Clinch or along Fletcher. We use ERA Realty or vrbo.com mostly. The Old Town is not close to the beach but is on the Waterway. As far as dining goes - in old town, there are a couple of restaurants w/Wine Spectator awards, as well as many other options. (I tend to favor The Beech St. Grill) You might opt for this in lieu of one of the resorts (thought you were staying at the Ritz ?!)http://www.elizabethpointelodge.com/.

Thanks for the responses - We originally were going to stay at the Ritz, but then thought we could save some money staying at the Amelia Plantation, or in town, and then use that extra money for activities or going out to eat. We are excited about our trip in June.
