Ambulance required

My husband and I were in Maui and he got very ill, requiring the use of an ambulance and fire truck to attend to him in the parking lot of the condo development we were in. This took quite a long time and thankfully he recovered. However, there was something I wanted to say to travellers - when something like this happens, do you realize how rude it seems to the sick person when everyone comes out to stare? It is very disturbing and stressful for the sick person and I know I have done the same thing myself! Please, when something like this happens, please give the sick person some dignity and privacy by just walking politely by (I wouldn't have minded if someone just asked if we needed some help instead of just staring!). Thank you!

I have been in your position with a loved one, cuteoldgal1, and you're right, it does add insult to injury to be stared at. All I can say in the gawkers' defense is that they don't mean to be rude, I'm sure. We are social animals, and they are responding to primitive impulses buried deep in our DNA to bear witness to calamity. It's the same reason we all slow down at a car accident, rubber necking.

Sorry for your trouble, and I hope your husband has made a full recovery.

If I am being carried out to an Ambulance, the last thing on my mind would be how many people are watching . .

Rich, of course, but take it from me, for the loved ones, it's just added woe. Not the biggest problem, of course, but it stings.

If someone I cared about was being packed out on a stretcher, the last thing on my mind would be who is watching . .
