On the other hand, Linda, almost everyone seems to like your Goth couple from Louisville. They are nice, polite, and not bad racers. Maybe those qualities are not representative of your area either.

No ....what I meant was I don't watch those kinds of TV shows....Lost, AR, whatever. None of them. I'm not putting you down or anyone on the show. I guess the only 2 "reality" shows I like are Dancing and Idol, but I consider those talent shows. To each his own! I do other things at night besides watching the tube....usually working.

For my daughter's 13th birthday a couple years ago, we had our own Amazing Race at the mall. I printed red and yellow striped envelopes and put clues and money inside. The kids had to search for clues, make purchases on a very limited budget, take photos of tattoos, get autographs, and other crazy things. I even made our parttimer stand in the mall with a red umbrella. They had to find a person with the umbrella for their next clue. For the Roadblock, they had to choose between eating green tea ice cream from Baskin & Robbins, or drink a shot of wheat grass from Jamba Juice. My son chose the wheat grass and threw up!
It took a little bit of planning, and going around the mall myself for clue ideas. Some stores like Game Stop were willing to play along with us. The kids were very ingenious on how they got their items on a limited budget. It was so much fun!

What a great idea offlady. Sounds like a really fun time.
Linda - if there are shows you do like to watch but miss because of scheduling conflicts, I find that a DVR is a terrific solution. I am usually not watching TV when the shows I want to watch are on, so I record the ones I like and then watch them when I have time. It is nice because when I am in the mood for TV, there is always something good on

We also did this with my son's 5th grade class on their Catalina Island field trip. I had the probably the 5 fastest boys in the school on my team, but we lost because they never would stop to try to think things through. They'd just grab the clue and start running. For example, one of the clues was to go to "Golf World" to get their next clue. They just started sprinting to the Country Club, but they were supposed to go to the miniature golf course.
The parents who put it together did a really good job. It opened my eyes to how hard it would be actually running in a real "AR".

J Correa.....we have TIVO! It's great when you have teenagers and a hubby who travels. Plus, an idiot can figure it out so I loved it within 10 minutes. I'm just not a TV fan. I find it difficult to sit and watch shows. I record a few movies and watch them when I work out, etc, but am not much of a TV person. I once went without one for a year and a half! More people should try that!!

While I don't doubt we'd all be better with a LOT less TV, do think we'd also be better off without a lot of "should" instructions from the judgmental.... fwiw, "Lost" is fiction while Amazing Race is non-fiction but, I suspect, controlled by producers to produce results they can predict and live with. Plenty is still random -- like flat tires and strange taxi drivers -- but a lot isn't.
Which is why I stick to taking in what I can about places I may or may not ever see, and try not to get too invested in hating the couples we're supposed to hate.

To each her own, but I have no desire to go without TV. I don't think it is something I should try I do think that there are people who watch too much TV and would probably be better off watching less and spending the extra time on other things. I don't think giving up TV entirely is a solution though - unless you really don't care for it like Linda, in which case you really aren't giving anything up.

After watching the supplemental clips at the AR website, I feel like we saw far too little of the race Sunday night. The 40 minutes or so of coverage was not enough to show what was happening to that many teams.
After watching the other material, I was left favorably impressed by the three all women teams, and less impressed by the Goth male. But the most annoying player was the father - though his daughter is nice enough to help balance him out.
