Alternatives to the Caribbean in mid-October
My husband and I, along with our 3 year-old daughter are planning a trip for mid-October to Turks and Caicos. I have heard the beaches are great for toddlers. We hoped to stay at the luxurious Somerset and got a great deal on a Penthouse condo there. The problem is that my mother thinks we are making a poor decision since I will be at the end of my 2nd trimester (after 2 IVF cycles and trying to get pregnant for 2 years) and is concerned about medical care in the Caribbean. There is some truth to her argument, but we also don't plan our lives around every possible contingency.
Anyway, I am now looking for somewhere we may be just as happy with in Florida. We do not want to just stay in an average high-rise condo resort, but would like a kitchen. I would like to stay at a resort (vs. a beach house) that may have other kids that our toddler could play with. We do like luxury, but are looking for great deals. The upper end of our budget is $3000 including taxes, fees for room only for 6 nights. Ideally $2000-2500 would be better. We must be able to fly there with a short car ride from the airport (less than an hour). We must be directly on the beach - ideally just outside of our room or a short walk away. I would rather not get on an elevator to get to the beach. The rooms must be nice too as we like to spend time indoors as well as out just relaxing. A Kids Club would be great.
Any suggestions? We may still end up in T&C, but thought I would look around for my mother's sake (and mine to a lesser degree).

A couple of random thoughts just to get started. You will get better answers than this.
1. It is still hurricane season in both places. Which would be easier to get home from if weather develops? Who would give you a refund if weather cancels or delays your flights?
2. What does your doctor say about traveling at the end of the second trimester after IVF? This is the real question.
3. This isn't exactly prime family vacation time, so you may find other kids are few and far between.
Good luck!

Destin. You can fly into Destin (VPS), Pensacola or Panama City. The water (crystal clear) and sand (snow white) are as close to the Caribbean as anything you will find in the States. The vast majority of Destin accommodations are condos, some very nice and upscale, so you can have a kitchen.
Another plus is the weather. It is a little cooler and less humid in October in north Florida but the water is still plenty warm for swimming. AND it is the off season so accommodations are very reasonable. And of course it is the gulf so usually just gentle waves which will be nice for your little one.

This isn't exactly what you are looking for, but the past 2 years in February we have rented a 2 bedroom condo at the Club at Naples Cay. We have rented through Premiere properties and everything has always been very professional. We stayed on the 6th floor and the 5th floor. They have nice kitchens, and are very spacious. The balcony overlooks the pool and it is a short walk over a board walk to the beach. Since it is the Gulf coast the waves are smaller. There isn't anything between the place and the beach, but it is a little bit of a walk. There are a lot of great restaurants around, even some you can bring a 3 year old to (our daughter was nearly 2 and nearly 3 when we traveled). I think the rates would be very reasonable in October. They also recommended a rental place they work with that has lots of kids stuff. We have rented a crib through them it has always been set up before we arrive.

Lots of nice properties on Amelia Island + you are in close proximity to JAX. As an aside, I would be more concerned about what my Dr. would say about travel @ that point in time w/my pregnancy than anyone else. My wife traveled @ 6 months to France (w/our 1st child) & @ 7 months (w/our 2nd child) to Puerto Rico (which may well be another consideration).
