Alternatives to Biking Down Haleakala

If we're not sure we can safely do a bike tour down Haleakala (Maui’s 10,000 foot volcano), does anyone happen to know of alternatives for experiencing the same effect (i.e., the night stars, the transition of climates down the mountain, etc.) without traversing down the mountain on a bike? Thanks.

There are several outfits that take you up and bring you back in a van.

Haleakala is spectacular. We just drove up mid-morning in our rental car. Absolutely amazing!

Convertible.
Don't forget to hike at least a portion of Sliding Sands trail. You may want to consider the horse rides down the trail.

We just did the drive ourselves - no need for bikes if that doesn't interest you.

I did the bike ride down the volcano a few years ago,and I have MS.I do have a balance problem so I was up by the leader.I just had to tell myself to lean for the hairpin turns. There were a few older people in our group and they did fine.I am a fairly cautious person.ski slowly also, but I do love a challenge. If you get scard there is a truck that you can ride down, that follows the riders.have fun in what ever you decide

Go up in the afternoon, and stay until the stars come out. You already are a bit familiar with the road from the daylight ride up, and there are no crowds.

We also drove up in the middle of the night. Its a beautiful view and neat to see the sunrise over the clouds. I felt like we had better options for our time than spending it on a bicycle. Its a pretty slow trip back down. Its an easy trip by car.

It does get cold up there so you need something in the middle of the night.

We went for the sunrise as well; our guide book said that no matter how many clothes you have on, it won't be enough. It was really cold - even ice on the ground, so dress appropriately if you do that and maybe even bring along some coffee or hot chocolate. Have fun!

Drive up in a car. It is awesome.Pull over to take pictures(especially when you are above the clouds!!! It's almost surreal.

Just go on your own... I would never do the bike thing myself. There are all kinds of interesting stops on the way up, campgrounds, view points. If you want to see sunrise I might take a tour bus, only because the drive is very curvey, even in a rental car it's an adventure, not something I'd do myself in the dark. As others have mentioned it's cold! So be prepared for that, any time of day.
