For those of you who need to contact PPC direct: [email protected] or do a search on this board.
As for a GTG: woo hoo! Not sure if I can make it, but hikerboy, you have my email.....maybe I can meet you for happy hour! The Kals realized that Don Ho's has the cheapest happy hour in town!
You can also do dim sum at Hong Kong Harbour View (gotta throw in that plug).
When do you all arrive? There is a huge block party for the Pro Bowl on Friday, Feb. 10 at Aloha Tower Marketplace from about 5:30 p.m. There will be free live entertainment, cheerleaders, mascots, NFL players, autograph sessions and photo ops. Admission is free.

Hi MelissaHI.
I've just sent an e-mail to PPC suggesting a GTG after his Chinatown tour, around noon on Monday, February 13. Hope you, and others can make it. Antoinette, have you decided about the tour and the GTG?
Thanks for suggesting happy hour at Don Ho's. I see on the website (http://www.alohatower.com/) that happy hour at Don Ho's Island Grill is every day from 3pm till 6pm, with $2 beers and pupus (free pupus on Mondays only!). The Aloha Tower Marketplace looks as if it's in a great location, and I hear there are breathtaking views of the harbor from the top of the tower (free)!
On the website calendar, they mention that the Star of Honolulu hula dancers perform on Pier 8 of Aloha Tower Marketplace each day except Sunday from 4:30-5:30. Is this worth seeing?
Finally, the website mentions that the Pro Bowl Block Party runs from 7 PM till midnight on the 10th, but does it really start a little earlier, at about 5:30? (My wife is much less excited than I am about seeing NFL stars, cheerleaders and mascots!)

I'd love to do a GTG, but I'll have to play it by ear for now.
I've got some family matters that have been taking up my lunch hour every day and I'll have to see what transpires over the next few weeks before I can commit.
I like Mei Sum - that's where I usually go, as it's the closest to my workplace. Legend is good and I've heard good things about Fook Lam. Hong Kong Harbor View was the site of one of our GTGs and was pretty good, too. Plus, you can't beat the view.

Chepar, I like your suggestion. Mei Sum Chinese Dim Sum Restaurant is at
65 N Pauahi St. Let's go with that location for the GTG,unless there are strong feelings in favor of another place. So far, it's Peggy and me, with you and MelissaHI as tentative. Do we need to reserve, or is it a walk in place?

The Aloha Stadium Swap Meet will be open on Saturday, February 11 but will close on Sunday for the Pro Bowl. For more information, go to http://www.alohastadium.hawaii.gov/events/swapmeet.html
I enjoy going to the Swap Meet just for the exercise and the glimmer of hope that I will come upon a "find" in the process. Obviously, this is premised on a fairly leisurely schedule, so if your vacation plans are tight, you could look at something else, yes even Long's at Ala Moana Center or (gasp!) Chinatown.
As for the tour on Monday, February 13, I will alter the route and timing to provide for the possibility of a Fodor's
GTG.
As that date is a month away, I will not yet recommend a site. If the new Mandalay opens and the prices are right (or I can negotiate a package) we may go there. MelissaHi can check out the competition. Otherwise, Hong Kong Harborview is a possibility but I would also like to negotiate a package before deciding.
In any event, I will design something for that day and post it on a timely basis.
Thanks for inquiring, everyone!
Kung Hee Fat Choy!
Don't forget the Lunar New Year Celebrations on TWO grand weekends, January 20-21 and January 27-28.

Well, it looks as if a plan is coming together! For the Culinary Walking Tour of Chinatown, those of us participating will meet Pake Pork Chop at 9:30 on the 13th of February at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, 42 N. King Street (upstairs). Cost is $10 per person.
As PPC has offered, we will leave it in his very capable hands to select a location for the GTG, and to negotiate a "deal" for us.
He has suggested some interesting possibilities and I, for one, am really looking forward to the day, to exploring Chinatown with an expert, to having a great meal, and to meeting you all.

Iceeu2, Thanks for the good word. We are really looking forward to a great tour of Chinatown followed by the GTG, and to meeting some of the folks. It's bound to be a great day.
We are planning to make the most of our 2 weeks in Hawaii (Oahu & Kauai). We have never been before, but we are truly enjoying researching and planning for the trip. Thanks to you and others here, the islands have come alive for us, even before we touch down in HNL.
The "official" reason for the trip is to help old friends from Georgia celebrate the renewal of their marriage vows. They lived in Hawaii when they married, and are returning for the event.
Cheers to you from
New Brunswick, Canada

I've been looking forward to the opening of the Mandalay. So far the construction looks like it's moving right along - it's right next door to my office building.
It's owned by the same owners of Eastern Garden, I've heard - I've always enjoyed their dim sum.

*burp* hikerboy, I just had Hong Kong Harbour View dim sum 3 days in a row. I cannot even think about dim dum right now! Soooo Don Ho's is a strong possibility for me. Keep in touch.
As for the Pro Bowl party: I am so sorry, it IS at 7 p.m.! but you should come early to ensure good parking (and maybe a happy hour drink at Don Ho's).

Wow, glad to see this started something! My husband and I will definitely be doing the tour and whatever follows. We might even persuade our 2 friends who live in Honolulu to come too if they can get off work. I'm excited!

MelissaHI, you've got to cut back on the spam musubi! Hope to see you at Don Ho's, if not on Friday then at the Monday Happy Hour.
Antoinette, we'll see you at the start of the tour. We may also bring along a couple of mainlanders. Hey, wait, I'm a mainlander too!
To whet your appetite, here is a link to some interesting columns under the byline "What's Cooking Around Town by Anthony Chang," better known to us as Pake Pork Chop, inveterate tour guide and man about town, (Chinatown, that is).

I see U2, our friends live in Marietta.
I guess my excitement must be showing. I'll have to stop smirking at all those folks who seem to get more and more excited the closer their travel date gets. They seem to be dancing around in circles and asking wild, crazy, last minute questions. That'll be me in about 2 weeks.

Mayretta?....my dear one, less than 90 miles from us! Do you ever visit them, and did they come to the Atlanta GTG that we had in September?
So where will you stay on Kauai? That is the most wonderful place on earth!
Be sure to go up into the observation deck at Aloha Tower...cool.....

If you are interested, every year there is a practice for the NFC and the AFC at Aloha Stadium. It is free and open to the public. If I remember right it starts about 9 or 10 am and lasts a couple of hours.
One team on Thursday and the other on Friday. Many of the players stick around after practice to sign autographs.
