Aloha Hawaii Fodorites, question about the Molokini Snorkel Trip
For years we have included a Molokini snorkel trip in our Maui Itinerary. But after some storms 5 yearsago? , we noticed most of the sealife left with the coral. So the last 2 visits we havent gone. My question is: Has anyone taken this trip recently and can compare it to prestorm times? Would you recommend the Lanai snorkel trip over the Molokini one?

Been going to Molokini for 20+ years and it has rapidly declined in fish life but I find that the morning has more sea life activity and we swam with a local monk seal that was an incredible snorkeling experience.
I really enjoy Lanai and would recommend it over Molokini.

Thank you for the response. Molokini can be incredible, my first time there(about 15 yrs ago) I couldnt believe it. We never saw a Monk seal, but once a HUGE ray came in and gracefully swam among the schools of tropical fish, it was an special experience. 2 years ago we booked the Lanai trip but was cancelled due to wind. We hope its better this year.
On another note: Have you dined at Roys in Kapalua lately? A few people on tripadvisor said it was sold and not as good as in years past.

Molokini back in the day was so incredible, so seeing it now so barren with fish, it's really sad.
Monk seal hung with us for an hour..it was the most amazing thing and an underwater crew was filming and they couldn't believe it either since they are so rare and this monk seal would give us kisses and hug us too..talk about the Aloha spirit!
We try and hit Roy's everytime we are in Napili and the food is about the same..don't know if it has sold.
We love for breakfast the Plantation house at Kapalua..cheap, no wait and gorgeous views..Gazebo too but with a wait.

We snorkeled at Molokini last February (a year ago) and were disappointed. We had been there about 4 years before that and saw more fish then. This was an alternate trip since the one to Lanai was cancelled because of high wind. I would have preferred the Lanai trip. We took it several years ago and saw spinner dolphins on the way. We like going from the shore too. It can be more at your leisure and helps those people who are a bit skiddish of the water.

When are you headed to Maui?
We'll be in Kauai in September for a couple of weeks and might do a side trip to Lanai for a couple of days..
Plantation House for breakfast is the best kept secret on the west end..they have some great deals..$10-12 eggs with ahi benedict with a wasabi hollandaise..all in this fancy place.
Golf at Kapalua is always fun and the rates are coming down a little.
