Albuquerque to Durango? Scary driving?
I have read some of the comments about driving from Albuquerque to Durango, but I have a different question. I am used to driving on the gulf coast, flat, no mountains. Can you describe what Highway 550 to Durango is like? I notice it crosses the Continental Divide. Are there curvy, winding, steep dropoffs involved? In otherwords, scary driving? Once we get to Durango we plan to take bus or jeep tours.
We don't trust ourselves driving in the mountains. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

No, the drive is fine. Now, once you hit Durango, try the road up through Silverton and Ouray for the kind of route you described as "scary".
We did both drives in winter - on snow pack from Alb to Durango and on ice through "Little Switzerland". The drive to Durango was through high desert and no problem...even for Southern gals in the winter. Enjoy the drive. Make sure to plan to stop in Santa Fe or Taos to stretch your legs and shop a bit.

I agree with Gracie; there's nothing scary about the drive. You're not even aware of crossing the divide if you don't see the sign. The only thing that might be a little intimidating for some is a short section where you drive above the Animas River for a few miles. It's 2 lane road and there aren't guardrails, but I think the shoulder is fairly generous. I do avoid the drive from Albuquerque at night, because it's pretty desolate.
