Alaska mostly CDMA with very little GSM coverage. It appears (but I can't confirm) that Cellular One (Dobson) is GSM and has a roaming deal with TMobile at 850.

But the U.S. in general is behind the curve on GSM phones -- it's not like you can pick up a SIM card on every corner, unfortunately.

I have a Tracphone and it never failed me. I used it all over Alaska. The only time it failed was when in BC on the way home and we were in a extremely remote area.

mooselywild - a prepaid phone card means i have to put a looong code on every call or just once (or maybe not at all?)?

Maybe Alaska was set aside for intervention and recovery for cell phone addicts.

Well, yes, usually- but by the 3rd or 4th call, you probably have the # memorized

And is Alaska a vacation?? How many calls will you need to make? Jorr- LOL! Yeah, aby, think of this as a chance to leave modern complications behind........

I never bring my cell phone on my vacations. I go on vacations to get away from it all.

Get the phone card. Mine is only 5 cents per minute. If you have to find a public phone and dial in three complicated numbers per call it will limit your erge to call. Cell phone rehab 101.
