Alaska Cruises - Reviews?

Hi - We're planning an Alaska cruise for our August 2003 honeymoon and are overwhelmed by the number of different choices/itineraries?
Any feedback/reviews would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Lisa:
You need to get people a little more info before you can get valuable info.

The 2 most important question -
How long of a vacation are you planning for? 7,8,9,19-14 days?
How much money are you budgeting for this trip - this should include airfare, cruise, and siteseeing.
Other Questions :
Have you cruised before? Do you have a cruiseline preference ?
Where are you flying from?
Are you interested in pre or post cruise port city touring?

If you give people some of the info above, then you can get useful info. For instance, many people suggest getting a balcony room for a Alaska cruise. But this will double the cost of the cruise alone - so if you aren't planning to spend that much, that recommendation wouldn't matter to you. (BTW: You DON"T HAVE to have a balcony room to enjoy an Alaskan cruise)
I was on a southbound cruise this past July, and had a GREAT time. So give us some more info, and will give you some advice!
How active a trip are you looking for? In other words, do you want to go glacier hiking, canoeing?

Hi Lisa! We went to Alaska this year, the first week of September, it was fantastic!! we love everything about the cruise! it was with Celebrity, the Mercury, we had a balcony, which we enjoyed and use it so much!! On top of all the geographical beauty one night we had the most incredible Aurora Boreal! and luckly the weather was very nice, just a little rain one day, and even that was interesting! I whish you a very happy and beautiful honeymoon!

We did Princess in August. Think BALCONY! We would have given up alot just to have that balcony. I'm sure that it didn't double our room cost. On rainy/cold days, you could still use your balcony. Plus, chairs, etc., were sometimes hard to find on deck. We did southbound. Unbelievable experience. Princess was super, absolutely not a problem at all. Good food, staff, etc. Bring gloves, hats, & layer your clothes. It was chilly - imagine me wrapped up in the terry cloth bathrobe with my mittens and earwarmers - with my mouth wide open in amazement at the glaciers! It happened and it wasn't a pretty sight. Another good reason for that balcony...you can look really stupid and no one will know!

I have to agree with Been There. We had an inside room, relatives had a balcony. We were sorry we didn't spring for the balcony. Imagine lying in your honeymoon bed with a floor-to-ceiling view of the Alaskan coastline...so romantic! Your are always between islands, so there is so much to see - fairly close too.

Go to www.cruisecritic.com. A great website, with many reviews, they even have a questionaire which narrows down your choices for you, along with a very active message board.

Congratulations!
