We took a Holland American Inside Passage Cruise a few years ago. The highlight of the cruise was Glacier Bay. I think only a limited amount of ships can enter the Bay so make sure it is on your itinerary. A park naturalist comes aboard and provides info and commentary. Being Floridians, we found the Glacier calving especially amazing. Holland American provided for lots of physical exercise opportunity along with other activities. They offered a healthy choices for meals. Points were given for completing a certain amount of health conscious choices and prizes were awarded at the end of the cruise. It balanced well with some of the meal splurges and kept us active during days at sea. Sitka was especially interesting and so was the sea plane ride over the glacier fields. The raft trip left most of the participants seasick. It was a great experience. Enjoy.

You might want to look into the alask ferry system.
You can get on and off at places along the way.
I booked from 5/28 thru 6/24 with 2- 5 day stops
along the way. Passenger fare is dirt cheap. My
Motor home is 6 times the passenger fare. But no
hotels to pay.

Roger,

I wold be interested in any advice or info you would give. We have a tentative cruise booked on Holland Am. for early Aug. It's Vancouver to Anchorage with 6 days on our own from Anchorage. It is so very expensive (could be well over 15k for 2 adults and 2 children)we are thinking twice. Need to decide asap!

Thanks,

Andrea

Look into some of the Princess Cuises to Alaska or the Cruise-Tours. They have a wonderful one that has a 7 day cruise and a 5 day tour. Princess has their own glass domed railcars that take you into Alaska. It's a long train ride, but you get to see alot. Including air, tour and cruise, I think it ran us just over $4500. for the total package. It includes everything except your meals on the tour. This was a great cabin too-w/balcony. The balcony's are great in Alaska. You can awake in the morning going through Glacier Bay to Glaciers going past your Balcony, great to see the whales also without fighting the crowds up on deck. It's worth checking in to!

Is it true that if you drive through Alaska in May say from Anchorage to Fairbanks that you must have hotel reservations along the way? My husband and I just wanted to get in a car and go with some degree of spontaneity. Is that unrealistic?

My husband and I are interested in starting our vacation in either Seattle or Vancover. We'd rent a car and then catch a "car ferry" to go up the Alaska coast to see Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway/Haines (having our rental car to drive around at each of these ports to see the terrain), then back on the ferry and onto Glacier Bay National Park, Valdez and Seward. We want to do a thorough job of seeing the "main ports". From here we would drive around for 10 days (plus) to see Anchorage, Denali National Park, Fairbanks, Gates of the Artic National Park then over to Whitehorse and Dawson (Yukon Territory). We would then drop the car in Alaska before flying back out of Anchorage or Fairbanks to Vancover or Seattle. Does the Alaska Marine Highway Company have a "car ferry" service? Is a "car ferry" more economical than a cruise ship? A cruise is not out of the question, however, we feel restricted time and mobility wise when you get approximately (6) hour of sightseeing once you get off the ship and usually end up buying a tour package in order to see something. What companies offer "car ferry" service? We're open for suggestions.

Looking for nature loving travel companions to share costs for a unique Whale watching adventure in Southeastern Alaska, in the Frederick Sound/Chatham Straits area.
Dates are Aug. 9-18 for 10 days departing from Juneau.

This is a private charter with a non-profit research foundation studying the social behavior of endangered Northern Pacific Humpback Whales in Alaska's spectacular scenic Inside Passage. Their goal is to observe the whale's social and co-operative lunge feeding behaviors. All members of the foundation are volunteers, and very dedicated, laid back, fun-loving people.
Humpback Whales are magnificent animals, which migrate from Hawaii, Japan and Mexico to summer feeding grounds in Alaska- they have the longest and fastest documented migration route of all the great whales.
Humpbacks range from 30 to 50 feet long and can weigh up to 50 tons-- these whales feed on small fish and kril- a tiny shrimp- and they have no teeth and are harmless to humans. Their brains are amoung the largest in the animal kingdom.
Humpbacks often can be seen breaching and with their young. Seeing them is one of the most exciting experiences in your lifetime! They have changed my life-- when I am with them, I forget all my trivial human worries.

The 10 day trip is aboard "Arctic Sun" a 58 foot modern Bertram yacht with 3 private cabins, and 3 heads, 2 zodiacs, coast guard approved safety/ communication equipment. The research foundation has used this yacht before and had excellent service. The captain is well seasoned in Alaskan waters- and the boat's size allows access to breath taking areas of the Inside Passage and a highly personal, up-close experience. More boat info can be obtained by viewing their web-site at:
http://alaskan.com/vendors/awe.html
The yacht is comfortable, and has just been re-furbished- but is NOT a cruise ship- ie- no casino, no bingo,no floor shows nor ice carvings- with 100's of tourists- you must be responsible for your own entertainment. Only 6 persons plus 3 crew, up close with whales! It's a great show!

The trip includes all meals on board .
we are looking for two more adventurous souls who would like to share the cost of chartering the yacht.

Sightseeing: (nature viewing, glacier viewing, wildlife viewing- possible: orcas, gray whales, seals, minke whales, bear, eagles, salmon etc.) is also available on this trip, and there will be opportunities to do scenic nature hiking on shore.
This is an informal natural history/research adventure, which could become one of the most thrilling experiences of your life. Being close to the great whales - as large as your boat- hearing their blows, watching them feed, breach and survive is awesome!!-- they make you feel how important life in the natural world is-.

Cost is $2800.00 per person not including airfare, if we get 2 additional persons to join our little group.

(This is a bargain- comparable natural history cruises with many more people cost over $3000- 4000.00 per person for 10 days-- I have researched such trips over the past 2 years )

Call your travel agent for bargain summer airfares to Alaska- routing through Seattle often saves $.

We fly into Juneau to arrive by Aug. 8- hotel in Juneau is not included in the above charter rate. Juneau is Alaska's state capitol and is a fun & historic town to visit.
There are some reasonable guest houses available.

By participating in this thrilling adventure, we are helping to fund important research which can help save the endangered Humpback Whale.
If you would like more info., please contact
[email protected].

And-- if you ever travel to Alaska during summer or Hawaii in the winter- go Whale Watching --even if for a 1/2 day-- a thrilling opportunity not to be missed!!

My husband and I are leaving for Anchorage on June 13 for only 8 days. We plan to rent a car and drive around. Can you give us any suggestions about where to go?

Is there still any dogsledging in June at Anchorage area?

Thank you very much for your help.
