Are there airports close to Pittsburgh, PA that could serve as an alternative to PIT? Close to me is within an hour of Pittsburgh. Thanks!

"...within an hour" Is that going the speed limit or faster?
Morgantown? Erie? Youngstown?

The answer, that is, is "no".

Altoona has an airport. I'm not sure if Johnstown does or not. Is that close enough?

I used Travelocity's Search Surrounding Airports utility for PIT-- and the closest with scheduled airline service is Morgantown, WV (MGW)-- and the airline is US Airways, of course. MGW is about 61 miles from Pittsburgh.
The other Allegheny County airport-- Allegheny County (AGC)-- doesn't seem to have sceduled airline service. PIT seems to be the only choice.

Gee, rjw..looks as if "the answer" isn't necessarily "no" after all, does it?
Uh, BTW, what was the FIRST town I mentioned above????

Hmmm-- I didn't dispute the existence of those other airports, simply that the other airports aren't really alternatives. MGW, for example, can only be reached on US Airways Express (Beech B1900 turboprops)-- from PIT. That doesn't really make it an alternative field, does it?

We fly in an out of Pittsburgh all the time and we never have any complaints. Akron/Canton would be your next closest biggest airport.

I'm guessing because fares into and out of PIT are fairly expensive, since US Airways is still the main game in town. But that should change as it changes business models to a "low fare" airline.

I believe that Southwest recently began to hit PIT and are not in the search tools.

Latrobe (Arnold Palmer Regional, or Westmoreland County) is LBE. Northwest Airlines offers turboprop service to and from DTW, but that's the only airline. And who knows for how long, given NWA's problems?

I just flew Southwest into Pittsburgh last weekend from Chicago and my fare was $34 each way. I don't know whether you have the opportunity to fly Southwest but I did not think that price could be beat.

Southwest is great if you have a nonstop and aren't going long distances-- the fares are quite competitive. If you're trying to fly cross-country, the non-stops dry up, you end up with two and three intermediate stops, and the fare ends up (in my experience) more expensive than the majors and their main competitor cross-country, JetBlue.
But happily Southwest's presence at PIT will drive down the outrageous fares US Airways was trying to charge.

Does anyone know when US Air will be lowering fares from Pitt? I am trying to fly my son home for Thanksgiving and the fares are unbelievable. It is really unfortunate that there is no way to get form Pittsburgh to the Canton/Akron airport because the Air Tran fares are always great. I have researched it and can't seem to come up with any bus service.

Having flown through PIT often this year, I would guess that there's just not enough passenger traffic to exert downward pressure on airfares. The airport has always been half-empty when I've flown there. Southwest and Air Tran are probably using PIT as a stopping point to their east coast airports.
By the way, I priced a trip from SNA to PHL (Xmas is coming!) on Southwest, and it's far, far more expensive than the majors-- and far less convenient. I can fly American from three airports within 30 minutes of my house and it's at least $150 less on a round-trip basis.

In my defense as being branded as some sort of scam artist for having two threads on this topic (didn't realize it was such a grave faux pas!). Look at the topic line. This is actually not the second thread but the first one I typed. I didn't put Pittsburgh PENNSYLVANIA in the topic line and I didn't want to get a buch of responses naming all the Pittsburghs in the United States as I have often gotten this sort of response when I forget to include the state. There's really nothing shady or dubious about it. And my inquiry was merely about pricing and nothing more. I've sorry if I've made anyone feel like they've been decieved in some way.
