Mowrites: we ate at Kaya on Saturday night and it is still my favorite.
Another, and new place, that I liked a lot in the downtown area is Seviche, which is new and has a very groovy menu, and is on a fairly lively block for Pittsburgh, just a few minutes from the Wm Penn.
I say Kaya for lunch and Seviche for dinner. Maybe a Caribbean overload for one day; try to spread it out...
Next to the Heinz History Center is Eleven, a very cool and pretty good restaurant.
Maybe this year you can take a trip over to the South Side. You could walk but there is a sort of unpleasant strip for about 6 blocks after you cross the Smithfield St Bridge. Not dangerous or anything, just dull. Then you get to an area with stores, galleries, bars, and restaurants; this is East Carson Street.

The Dale Chihuly glass exhibit at the Phipps Conservatory is on and has gotten rave reviews. My daughter saw it and said it was fabulous! There's also a brand new dinosaur exhibit at the Carnegie Musuem. Finally, the Catherdral of Learning and its Nationality Rooms (on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh) are decorated for Christmas. I did see those recently and they were great. All of these places are located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, so maybe you can just make a day of it in Oakland.
