After Theatre Dining?
My husband and I will be seeing the Producers on May 31st. If we decide to do a late lunch (we arrive in town at about 1:00), we are thinking about dinner after the theatre. What time will that typically be? Any good suggestions in the area? We are staying at the Roosevelt on 45th and Madison and would like to keep it within walking distance assuming it's safe at that time. Thanks for all of the great ideas on this board. It is my husband's first time in New York and our only hope is to get in half of what we want to do.

I'm not a big fan of dining in the theatre district but one place I've gone back to a few times is
Dish of Salt
133 West 47th Street
New York, NY 10036
It is a cantonese restaurant and their food is very good. They claim to be open late but I'm not sure how late on a Thurs, you'll have to give them a call. Most shows get out between 10:30-11:00, if you call the theatre they will tell you. Walking will be as safe as anywhere in NYC.

You can try some of the places on West 46th Street (called Restaurant Row), between 8th & 9th Avenues in the theater district:
*Joe Allen's, where you might spot a celebrity or two.
*Orso, an excellent restaurant that will probably cost $40-50 per person including drinks and tip.
*Becco, one of the theater district's most popular spots.
I know that Joe Allen's is definitely open after the theater, and I think the other two are.
Definitely make reservations to play safe. When you make the reservations, tell the person what show you are seeing and they'll know the appropriate time.

theater won't let out until around 11pm. within a 10 minute walk from the theatre district... the Hudson Hotel has a fun restaurant and fabulous bar scene (including outdoor patio), it's a great scene... also, Asia de Cuba inside the Morgan Hotel (around 37th and Madison), Tuscan Steak (40th and 3rd... 5-10 minute walk from hotel), Pershing Square (42nd and Park/Vanderbiit), Redeye Grill, Judson Grill,Thalia... actually I would suggest even heading downtown and do something fun like Pastis (great brasserie and resonably priced... also, great for a drink... make a reservation)... or try Chelsea or Union Square area which is no more than a 5 minute cab ride.

One problem with the idea of catching a cab and heading downtown after a show is that it may take you a half hour or more to get a cab in the heart of the theatre district when the show lets out. My suggestion is Joe Allen's which is very close to The Producers, and indidentally one of Nathan Lane's favorite places -- I've seen him there twice, so who knows he might even be there that night. You need to call there exactly one week before (that's when they take reservations). They'll know the time for booking after any show. It's fun, boisterous, good food, very reasonable, and just "so Broadway theatre". If you want something more formal, elegant, and pricey, I'd go for Judson Grill.

Asia de Cuba is a wonderful place, and the communal table is high seats (in case you are concerned about such things) but just fine. It's a very cool room and swanky surroundings, and you'll be on the non-smoking floor. I would recommend going easy on the drinks there (although the drinks are fabulous!) because a) they are extremely pricey and will sneak up on you and b) you are on high chairs!
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
