Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, and Grand Central Station are the main things I want to do or see. They are the top of the list. Places I am going to stop by are Times Square,Federal Hall and Wall Street, UN (short 45 minute tour), South Street Seaport, Broadway, World Trade Center site, and chinatown for a quick meals. No, I am not doing these things to check them off a list. But, what I am saying is that they don't take a lot of time. Like Times Square, like one person said, "you see it and leave".

I mean spend ten minutes and walk around. There's only so much you can possibly do. Look at it and take it in for ten minutes. It is at Rockafeller Plaza, so since I am doing Top of the Rock, it is convienient. What in everybody's opinions are the must-sees of New York for the first time visitor? This post is getting kind of long and since I got most of my questions answered other than 86th vs. 102th floor of the Empire State Building and my itenerary, I am going to make two seperate posts specifically for those two questions.

The Brooklyn Bridge is a must do especially if you can fit in seeing the skyline from Brooklyn. I don't know about the 2 different floors on ESB. I've only gone to the outdoor one. I wouldn't go up if I couldn't go to that floor.
I think you can do the downtown stuff in one day but it's going to be a long day. Do Wall St., Federal Hall on the way to the Seaport and then take a cab from there to Brooklyn.

I said I would make a new post on this but I have a couple questions.
Dohlice- " I wouldn't go up if I couldn't go to that floor.
What did you mean by this?
I think day 1 and day 3 are very doable. I am just worried about day 2 with the statue of liberty/ellis island taking so long. But, since I am going to base myself in midtown, I can't see going back down to lower Manhattan another day unless I spent 3 nights. If I spent 3 nights, which is four days, how should I spread everything on that 3 day itinerary out? Keep in mind, day 1 I will arrive around 10 AM and day 4 leaving at 4PM.

Hi
No, I don't think 2 nights is enough. My wife and I went there for 6 days in 2004 and it was nice to have some time to experience the various attractions. Here is my trip report with pictures and links: http://gardkarlsen.com/new_york_city_trip_report.htm
We are going back to NYC in the end of this month and we are staying in Long Island City and it is only 2 stops from Manhattan on the subway. We got the hotel for 160$ which seems to be a bargain these days in NYC
Regards

Great trip report. How much time did you spend in NYC?
Everybody check this out- http://www.frommers.com/destinations...021020790.html
This is a itinerary that has everything I want to do in day 2 except the last 5 things.
Also check out: http://www.frommers.com/destinations...021020766.html
This is an itinerary for another day. 3,4,5,7, and 10 are the things I want to do. Rockefeller Center includes Top of the Rock. The only thing missing is the UN. I decided I will save museums for another trip. This trip I just want to see sites.
Thanks-
