Advice for a 3 day NYC college visit late Jan.

Dear Experts:
Okay, have done tons of traveling but very little in NYC. We fly in Thursday am and visit her college, School of Visual Arts most of Friday afternoon. We leave Saturday at 3. I know, I know, too short. We're staying near SVA, as well as the restaurant Les Halles. Is it worth the vist? Dropping off luggage at the hotel, TH am, what do you recommend (museums, galleries, books, chocolate) near that part of town? Friday night we plan on visiting Met Museum, since it's open late.
Thoughts as well for Friday and Sat am? Thanks!

Top of the Rock to get an overview of the city
MoMA would seem to be an obvious stop
You might have a look at the Museum of the Moving Image

It's supposed to be cold all week - so you may want to limit your time outdoors - although exploring a NYC neighborhood is usually a reco it may be too chilly this week.

I would recommend going gallery hopping. There are buildings in the West 20 and high teens between 19th Avenue and the river that have galleries on all floors. You go to the top floor and work your way down.
One building is 529 West 20th Street another is 526 W 25.

There are also many excellent art supply stores. the largest of which is Pearl Paint on Canal. But near SVA is Friedman's.

There is a great Italian sandwich shop near SVA called DeFonte;s on Third Ave and 21 and the best bagels in NYC at Ess-A-Bagels on first Avenue and 21 ST.

There is a great, great indpeendent book store called THe Strand on Broadwaya and 12th Street.

For expensive art books try Rizzoli's

http://www.rizzoliusa.com/bookstore.html

For chocolates
Inexpensive-Evelyn's on John Street
Middle-Jacques Torres
Expensive-Kee's, Teuscher

Sorry for the typos, there was a distraction.

Of course the galleries are between 10th Avenue and the river. And the correct address is 526 West 26th Street

I'd make sure to check out Soho if even for lunch, dinner or tea. Marie Belle has a lovely tea room and great chocolates on Broome St. There's also one on Madison Ave. & 65th st. http://www.mariebelle.com/s.nl/it.I/id.3/.f

But most of all I'd ask dd what she'd like to do/see. When you say "her" college, has she already been accepted? If yes, congratulations!

If you've never been to NYC before or don't know it very well, you might want to consider an overview tour like kingofnyc.com

Les Halles is ok, but I prefer Artisanal, which has a good early prix-fixe menu and is not that much further from SVA. If it's not too cold, you could grab a sandwich at Baoguette (excellent Vietnamese-style sandwiches that are really tasty and cheap ... as in $5 or $6). They do have a few stools for eating in. It's on Lexington in the 20s.

SVA is on E 23rd St and that whole area is all residential. There are lots of restaurants up and down 3rd Ave so you will have lots of choices, also Little India is up Lexington Ave in the 20's Anna Purna being IMHO the best.

No Museums in the immediate area, but you might want to walk around Gramercy Park on 18th between Park and 3rd, one of the nicest vest pocket parks in the city.

The lower east side is not far away, and you might enjoy some of the shops restaurants on St. Marks Place (8th St just east of 3rd Ave), that is one of the student areas in the city. Around the corner on 2nd Ave will be a must stop Pomme Fritte, for the BEST fries a local hangout.

The Lexington Ave subway will be your easiest way to get around and in that area it is on Park Ave. The trip to the Met (get off at 77th St and walk from there), will take 20 minutes or so.

Have a great time while you are here.

Thanks, you all, I really appreciate the recs--yes, my daughter's been accepted, we planned this trip while she was applying for early acceptance. Figured she needed to visit in the winter so she knew what she was getting into. If all goes well she'll be showing me around town in the future.

Walk the length of the High Line (windy!) and finish off with coffee or light food at Chelsea Market. Free Google wifi @ CM.

A few other thoughts

SVA has just built some new dorms including one on Ludlow Street. You might ask about seeing those since they are a long walk from the 23rd Street building.

Also two other inexpensive places to eat

La Marca Third and 22. Closed Saturday and Sunday

tontonno's-whole pizzas and pasta 2nd Ave and 26th Street
