ADA Girl clearing up the confusion
well just now read some of the post, did not mean to cause such a fuss. I originally posted my message it was 1am in the morning and I was tried. Let me be a little more detailed. I have 10 days to experience Hawaii We have decided to do a hotel on maui and possibly 1 other island. The islands we are torn between are kauai and the big island. Any suggestions on these?
Our hotel stays look like this
4 nights maui 3night other island and the 2days for flight to and from.
I hear inter island air can run about $153 one way per person. If it were this much that is why we are not sure to island hop for the day. We are traveling 3rd week in july.

I'm confused by the arithmetic, among other things, of this post. Your quote for interisland airfare sounds as though it's roundtrip. Aloha Airlines currently advertises one-way fares starting at $59 for Airpass members. Believe membership is free. Also offers discount for booking on-line. You might investigate flying into Maui and home from the second island to reduce your interisland travel expenses. Are you planning to stay in a hotel the days you arrive and leave? Is there a 1 a.m in the afternoon?

I'm not crazy about island hopping, so my advice to you is to pick one island and stay there the entire time. If you choose Maui, you could split your time there up between two locales. 5 days in Kaanapali and 5 days in Wailea, or 7 days Wailea/Kaanapali and 3 days in Hana, etc. Get a couple of good guide books and do some reading about the islands too, which will help your planning.

I think you can have a wonderful trip splitting your time between two islands. I think with only three nights on another island, I would choose Kauai. You can easily spend one day in the northern area and take a raft trip on the Na Pali coast, a day in the lush central area, and a day visiting Waimea Canyon with beach time in Poipu. Pick your hotel/resort area based on how much beach/pool time you want.
People have a wide range of ideas about how they like to travel. We like to keep busy and see many things, and a couple hours on the beach snorkeling is plenty for the day. None of the five of us in the family wants to lay around in the sun. Based on that, my recommendations for a trip are going to be VERY different from someone whose idea of paradise is relaxation at the beach or pool. There's nothing wrong with either choice, but it is helpful to know a little about someone's concept of a great vacation before we dispense advice. Good luck. Hawaii is fantastic.
