To get good recommendations you'll need to be more specific about what you're looking to do on the island, and what your definition of "inexpensive" is.

Don't know if it makes a huge difference, but the Iron Man Triathalon is then. Might not be a good idea to wait?

We really like Sea Village condo complex on the Big Island, just below Kona. It's a smallish complex, I think there are eight three-story buildings. It's well-located for snorkeling and going to Kona. There are free tennis courts, barbecue pits in the pretty central garden area, and a nice little pool. We've always had a two bedrm/two bath with a full ocean view. They are individually-owned, so you can Google Sea Village and find several listings. The unit we've rented has always been nicely decorated and the complex is very well-kept. We've rented through Donita's Vacations.
