lolfn - Fair enough. I don't agree with your decision, but I also respect it.

Now, a different scenario - also happen in real life a lot:

- Down to one-lane in long constrution zone. Speed limit 40mph.
- Traffic is pretty heavy and you find a big truck's grill 6 inches from your rear bumper, because you're driving 45-50.

This time, my question is a little different. "Do you really think that's the safe thing for you and other occupants in your car to go at that speed?" [Ignore the fact that there's a 2-mile line of vehicles behind you, and all are calling your mom's name.] Just if it's safe for you.

---

Or a slightly different scenario. Again, totally common.

- Still two lanes through constrcution zone, but left lane now rides the shoulder and there's a sign that says "No trucks in left lane".

- Speed limit is still 40. Cars are going on the left lane at 60-65.

- You have about 2 mile long of trucks behind you, one riding your bumper.

What speed do you drive, and what lane?

---

All I am trying do in this thread is to say that things are not always black and white. Sometimes the safest thing to do is not the slowest, or the most legal.

And I'll can tell you that I've probably spent more miles on interstates under the speed limit then all of you who've responded here combined.

I'm a member of AAA and didn't know about this service. I read my member agreement many years ago and don't remember most of it

I don't plan on visiting jail over the weekend, but you never know.

I'll drive at a speed I feel comfortable with (usually no more than 5-8 mph over limit). Go ahead and pass me, I won't mind.

However, I do mind is when I'm on I-85/I-40 and in the far right lane (slowest lane) going around 70-72 (with the cruise control on) and some jerk comes up on my tail and expects me to move over. The jerk has THREE other lanes but wants me to move over. I could understand if I was in the far left lane (fastest) but I'm in the right lane. By the way, I find the far right lane the most empty going through Alamance County, NC. End of rant. Maybe I should have posted that on Rants and Raves.

In Illinois, when stopped for a traffic violation, you will be required to hand over your drivers license as an assurence that you will pay the fine for the ticket. When you pay the fine, you get your license back. In the meantime, if you need to show proof that you are a licensed driver, you use the ticket receipt as proof that you are licensed.
As an AAA member, instead of handing you license over, you can hand your AAA membership card over & keep your drivers license in your possesion. Then when you pay the fine, your membership card will be sent back to you by the district that has jurisdiction. I know this because I have used it twice in the past 15 years. Once for driving on 5 feet of median to get to a left turn lane, & once for supposedly going thu a red light when I was going under the speed limit on a cold, snowy, slippery day. (don't ask, but Hoffman Estates police on Hwy 72/Higgins road do setup traffic violation traps, also Wayne township does along Army Trail Road.)
I have not had to use AAA for jail bond, so don't personnaly know how that works.

OK. This is dumb. We all know that you'll be caught speeding at some point. Everyone. Everyone speeds at some point during their daily journeys. Everyone.

Woah, didn't expect such a long dialogue -
Never know what a simple question will bring.
Basically, it sounds like it couldn't hurt, and could indeed help.
Thanks for the all the replies.

Yes, I've been in that situation but I persuaded my 2 children to turn round, smile and wave at the truck driver behind, he backed off.

Then again, I'm the driver who if you cut me up, I'll be waving enthusiastically at you and grinning in the hope that you think that I know you! I generally find it works with drivers who check their rear mirrors and that way I don't get stressed!

Dumbest thing I have ever read. Not EVERYONE speeds. I have been driving since the '60's and have never had a speeding (or any other moving violation) ticket. Doesn't mean I don't like fast - but I confine my speeding to the racetrack or autocross course.

And for those of you that speed in construction zones - there is a reason fines are greatly increased if you get caught doing that. One of the MOST dangerous things you can do.
