A weekend in Virginia (Newport News??)
According to this really neat site (meetinbetween.us), Newport Virginia is half way between me in NY and my friend in Pawley's Island, so we are thinking of meeting up. Any suggestins for this town or one nearby that might be nicer? Mostly we will walk around, and a pretty view of water is nice. We don;t expect to do much but gab and hope for some nice food, maybe a B and B??
Thanks, CB

I've been to Newport News a couple of times recently and they've got some great museums, but that doesn't sound like what you are looking for on this trip.
Williamsburg would be a nice place to meet. You can walk around Colonial Williamsburg (without entry to the buildings, except shops) at no charge. While it wouldn't be a water view, you might want to make lunch/dinner reservations at one of the taverns in Colonial Williamsburg.

Having lived in Newport News, I agree that, unfortunately, there is precious little scenery there. (You would think there would be...)
Williamsburg, on the other hand, would be great! Search for the many threads on this board dealing with restaurants, lodging, and touring around. Enjoy!

Meet in Williamsburg.

I highly recommend the amazing Williamsburg Inn, one of the finest hotels in the nation. (Queen Elizabeth stayed at the Inn last year.)
If the Inn is not an option, the Williamsburg Lodge is also fantastic.

I've lived in NN and while it has some nice history, I cannot think of many places where there's a hotel and a nearby area to "walk around".
So I also vote for Williamsburg. Gekko's recommendations are beautiful hotels practically in the historic area, but quite pricey. There are plenty of less expensive hotels nearby too.
If you want "water" - there's a few places over in the Oceanview area of Norfolk, almost immediately across Hampton Rds Tunnel (I-64) from Hampton, but the neigborhoods are "iffy". Better yet - go to virginia Beach for beautiful beach, very reasonable prices until spring - nice walking on the boardwalk or in the sand .. but not much else nearby - but it is generally safe.
My fav choice remains Williamsburg
