A THANK YOU TO COUNTRIES OFFERING SUPPORT

I know this is not a political site, but in the hopes that travelers from other countries read this I would like to say thank you for your support during the Katrina crisis. The citizens of the US are touched by your offers for help and appreciate the acknowledgement that we are not alone in this. I'm not sure why our government has failed to at least say "thank you" to you, but your offers mean the world to the citizens.

Yes, I add my thanks to the EU nations who have released their precious oil reserves for us, to Sri Lanka who gave us $25,000 - even after all the terrific devastation that they suffered during the tsunami-, to Cuba for offering to send doctors and money, to our northern neighbor, Canada, always ready to help us, and to all the other nations that have given immeasurably great gifts according to their ability to give. Thank you!

Yes! To all twenty countries that have offered help, we say thank you! Wish there was some way we could make our thanks well known and the good feeling it creates inside.

Completely agree. Read an article yesterday that listed many countries that have offered help, many countries that have had recent problems of thier own.

It's something we dont see enough of from our news outlets, but something that will help me to continue to offer help whenever I can and to whoever needs it.

Or at least acknowledge them. Fidel Castro offered doctors and aid, and there has been no reply.

Yes, yes, yes! Thanks to all who have offered to help. The people of the U.S. appreciate it, even if our government is too rude to say "thank you" often and publicly.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

A few hours ago CNN reported there were a 150 doctors at the airport in Cuba waiting permission to come to the US. Evidently they have been waiting quite awhile. Sigh!!

Fidel made the offer in one of his Xteen hour speeches. And of course, there are no formal channels thru which to make an offer.

As a European, I do feel with the victims and I am glad that my country (Germany) started to help - even though there were differences regarding foreign policy we are still all in the same boat.

What startled me was seeing yesterday night on TV that the German Army was ready to fly food and other support into the U.S. by last week. They did not get approval from U.S. authorities though. They decided to fly into Pensacola nevertheless and are continuing to do so - now having got the approval - from where the U.S. Army flies the packages into the disaster area.

But: They also had doctors flying in who said they were trying to establish contact with the U.S. army and trying to figure out whether their efforts might help. I just wonder why there aren't any operational channels through which this might be organized. After all we are talking about two NATO countries!

Folks, setting aside the screen name, this post is genuine. We care.

Ok, so after donating to my charity of choice, I couldn't sit still. I wanted to go and offer help directly, but that wasn't feasable.

Instead, I have done the only thing I know I can do quickly and effectively...build a website!

I have created a Hurricane Family Help portal located at http://www.hurricanefamilyhelp.org

1st things 1st - we DO NOT accept donations.

Here is the stated purpose:

1) To unite displaced individuals and families of hurricane Katrina with others willing to offer immediate SHORT TERM shelter.

2) To unite displaced individuals and families of hurricane Katrina with others willing to offer LONG TERM shelter.

3) To unite the survivors with family and friends.

4) To find full or part time employment opportunities for hurricane victims.

5) To provide contact information for charities, communities, and churches offering assistance.

Thank you,
Craig

I'm just glad that after all of the "Where is the rest of the World" posts that people realise that it's not that it wasn't offered - It's just that it wasn't shown on USA news networks!

Try BBCAmerica.
