Dilema: Cuba or Sri Lanka on a budget?

Given that I am on a budget, which destination would people most recommend, Cuba or Sri Lanka, I love the typical beach holiday but would also like to visit somewhere with a lot of character and things to explore, any suggestions ? Thanks, Helena

Go to Laos or Cambodia - lots of character.

Pardon me for asking, but can you possibly be serious?

1) You state you are on a budget.
2) You do not state where you are travelling from.
3) You pick two diverse destinations 16000 kilometres apart. Virtually 1/2 way around the world from each other.
4) Unless you are located approximately equidistant between these two points, then your travel costs alone would blow a modest budget.

You are talking diverse cultures and character. My only thoughts are that Cuba is a peaceful (though communist) country where you can travel with perfect safety. Sri Lanka suffers from much political unrest and ARMED rebellion does occur. Read this from Foreign Affairs for a full report. http://www.voyage.gc.ca/dest/report-en.asp?country=276000

Please try again.....
