I'd recommend that you contact a local agent in Sri Lanka. We used Boutique Sri Lanka and found them very helpful.
Do you have a guidebook? There are so many different areas in the country - all quite different from each other - you need to do your research in advance to be able to determine which areas you want to visit.

I would advise you to look at booking.com, or agoda, airbnb etc there are literally hundreds of different accommodation options available all over Sri Lanka ranging from super luxury to basic low budget. Even as a Sri Lankan who lives in Sri Lanka and travels around the country quite often I use these services to find accommodations. A basic search for "Sri Lanka" on booking.com currently shows a total of 7,477 properties!

I agree with Mohammed. At least to get an idea of what is available and the usual price for different levels.
We went with an in-country agent in order to hire a driver and sort of regretted leaning on them so heavily for accommodation. Some bad communications there. Otherwise, get a good recommendation like Kathies.
