A Texas Wedding
My fiance and I are planning on getting married in Texas on the beach (for sentimental reasons that would take too long to explain). Anyway I was wondering if anyone has any tips on planning a wedding/getting married in Galveston (or nearby) or on S. Padre Island in January/February. Is it common? What is the weather like on the coast in Jan/Feb? Do you know of anyone who has done this? We would like to avoid the America's Funniest Home Videos wedding if at all possible! Unfortunately one of our friends went to the Carribean last month and it turned out to be a disastrous rip-off; one of our reasons for staying in the states. I will be in the Houston area for a conference at the beginning of August 2005 so I will be able to drive down to Galveston to see it for myself. Please offer your comments.
Thanks.

I would think that South Padre would have more desirable weather in January/February. I haven't lived in Houston in many years, but from past experience the weather can be pretty glum and cold in Galveston at that time of year.

Statia is correct that Galveston can be pretty chilly in Jan/Feb. The beach there is also notorious for not being especially beautiful, and for having lots of tar/oil on it.
SPI will be somewhat warmer, but not warm enough to go swimming. The beach there is prettier, though I've never heard of anyone getting married on it.
Keep in mind that Texas does have a 3-day wait after a marriage license is issued. Or at least they did in 1994...

I would suggest you go to So Padre Island. It is much better than the beaches at Galveston. The sand isn't great and the water is murky. We don't have world class beaches like Mexico or Hawaii, but South Padre has the prettiest if a Texas beach is what you want. The weather during that time of year will be more mild because it is very south. Good luck.
