This is for one night only - our last night in NYC
id like to stay somewhere really nice....4 star and up - would love to hear any recommendations?

we're staying at The Excelsior (UWS) for 4 nights then in
DC for 2nights and back to NY where we booked an apt in Midtown so for our last night we'd like to try somewhere really great!

We are missing 2 crucial pieces of information--when are you coming, and how much are you willing to spend? A "really great" hotel in midtown Manhattan, on a weekday, September-December could easily run $600 per night or more.

I'd suggest The Palace as one of the nicest hotels in the city, and again, I have contacts there, so let me know if I can be of any help.

yeah i was thinking of the ACE
but the problem is
we'll be on 47th between 8-9th and I dont want to lug all our 'stuff' across the other side of town for one night
so thats why I thought to stay in the same midtown area
this is for our last night 24th September09
so yeah I know...fall prices ...we hope to find a good discount rate for somewhere nice
are the 'W' hotels still hip and happening or not so much anymore?

By "really nice" I was thinking the Four Seasons or the St. Regis, or maybe the Mandarin Oriental. But those won't be $600 a night for a nice room!!

Reallly consider if it's worth lugging all your stuff for one nite in a "nice" hotel. Are you planning on spending a lot of time there? If you plan on only spending the nite there, it may not be worth it.

First, I'm worried about your apt. Many of the short term apt. rentals are illegal (building won't allow it or city code won't) or worse, scams where you pay your money and find you have no place to stay. Are you sure about this place?

As for the last night splash out hotel, to me it only makes sense if you plan to spend some time in the hotel and perhaps eat there. Are you interested in a splash out dinner too?

There are no 5* Priceline hotels so you can't go that route. Many of the 4*'s are not that exciting and that date is a pricey one. Finally, I could actually understand doing this if you wanted to try a different neighborhood but to stay in the same area? Since you'll need a taxi to get your stuff from point a to point b anyway, why does it matter whether it's a 4 minute taxi ride or a 15 minute ride?

You might consider trying the Ritz Carlton Battery Park downtown. Many of the rooms have great views. As for the W hotels, they're not all that nice. The W in midtown (on Lexington Ave.) has famously small rooms. The W Times Square is nothing special imo. The W Union Square would be the hippest location with lots of excellent restaurants near it.

The Iroquois New York is a lovely luxury boutique hotel.

We love the Benjamin hotel across from the Waldorf in midtown..just shy of the 5*

ok what about Union Square or Gramercy area - do u recommend anything there...

Gramercy Park Hotel or W Union Square are the best options for "nice" in those areas. The Giraffe is not far from Gramercy Park and is also a very nice smaller hotel.

In Midtown, we have always enjoyed the Michelangelo--you can Google it and see if it meets your definition of "really nice". It's a boutique hotel, but not in the modern style, more in the European style. A warning, though: I haven't stayed there in about 2-3 years, and I have no idea what the rates may be. Good luck!
