(I felt the need, in some little way, to have an effect on this mans life. It is difficult to place the emotion that I felt towards him. Was it pity? No, it was far complex than that.)
divine moment.
(I finally got to experience that famed LA traffic.)
Hey- we wanted to send you off first class. LOL
Not to be redundant but you sure know how to make people feel through your words...
I would have NEVER guessed your profession.
And MBnancy said it all!
Thanks a million Aussie Rock Star!

Another fodorite who enjoyed your trials and tribulations...hope you make it to the East coast next year, we have a lot to offer and it would be a whole different experience, culture and scenery wise! You are a wonderful writer!
I hope to one day visit your country too, just haven't made it that far, yet!

A fantastic finish!
If you do spend a few days in Los Angeles next year, we'd better plan a GTG!
Thanks again, very much. This has been almost as wonderful a trip for your readers as it was for you and your family.

The greatest trip report ever! I just happened upon this today and have read it all at one sitting--though I confess I skipped many comments from fellow readers.
One of the things that made it fun to read was your positive and accepting attitude.
I hope that some day you will be able to visit our beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Shanek,
This has been my daily read for the past weeks and I've been telling my husband about all your adventures
I hope you don't mind me asking, as our family will be travelling to SOCAL too this September, What kind of insurance did you get when you rented your car? If I'm not mistaken there are at least 3 kinds? What is the most necessary to get? I don't want to get all because its just way too expensive? What do you think is the most practical to get based on your experience?

Fantastic report! I stumbled across it as I was researching my own 'Aussie in America' adventure, what a brilliant resource you've become!
I'm traveling in October with my wife and three kids and doing the LA/San Francisco/San Diego/Yosemite thing. Your report was an exciting preview for me, wonderfully written and it was utterly refreshing to read such an account by an Aussie (complete with a reference to the mighty 'G!).
One thing shanek, how did you find the driving in LA? It's the only thing about the trip that I'm more anxious than excited about. It's not the traffic so much, more the left side/right side thing. From your account it seems like you took it in your stride.
Should I be nervous? Or should I just man up a little!

Hi Kevlar35,
I loved the driving. It all makes sense when you are sitting on the opposite side of the car. I had more problems deciding which door to enter the car from than the actual driving part. I just made out that I was being the perfect gentlemen!!
When you are in traffic, you have something to follow but it requires a little more concentration when you are alone on the road.
Going to the "G" today to see the Tigers take on Carlton and have just finished showing off my California photos to the in-laws. I have almost finished collating them, with my re-written journal, into a book on blurb.com. I will provide a link when it is complete.
Thank you for reading my report. I would be more than happy to provide you with any further assistance to your planning.

This is the California trip report to end all trip reports. From here on out, anyone with questions about California should be directed to Shanek and Stu Dudley. Just excellent and so moving. As someone else said, if you do come back to CA, please alert us so that we can all try to meet you and your family.

You wondered where the big cacti were..To see the saguaros, you would have traveled south in Arizona to Tucson where the Saguaro National Parks are located. YOu would have seen a few in thePhoenix area but needed to go farther south to see more.

Shanek: Your writing style is amazing, entertaining and filled with info. I fell in love with it after the Beijing TR. I live in CA now and this one almost tops Beijing. Are you going to China this year?

Thanks for sharing shanek. I loved this trip report. I might be taking a niece and nephew to Northern California next summer and I'll certainly be referencing your travelogue. I look forward to your book.
