750ML/Portland,OR

Has anyone been here lately? They were just featured in Sunset for having a great wine bar. Putting together a list for an upcoming trip to Portland next month.

Wine Down, Clarklewis, Paley's Place, 750ML, Tabla and Wildwood are topping the list. I hope to really spend some serious time in Portland playing around before a business trip.

Any other suggestions from the locals out there? TIA!! ***kim***

Kim, there is a new restaurant called Henry's 12th Street Tavern that is really good. It just opened about a month ago. The website for it is www.henrystavern.com. We had lunch there a few weeks ago and it was great.

Hi kim, I went to 750ml in March. It is very good. We didn't eat a full dinner, just had a flight of wine and shared a few appetizers. Great place But the word is the Noble Rot is THE wine bar. Even when we went out to some of the wineries the winemakers were talking about it. It is on the Lloyd Center side of the river, just down the street from Navarre (another GREAT place).

If you have time to spa check out Aequais in the Pearl District.....heaven!

Another one for the list! This place sounds wonderful. So many great things on the menu. I've been on a crab cake and lettuce wrap kick lately and this place serves it all.

What did you have for dessert? The white chocolate cheesecake sounds very nice and the banana creme brulee, also.

My daughter would enjoy trying their pizzas! Something for everyone here. Thanks for the tip! ***kim***

Noble Rot is the better place, but 750ML's location in the Pearl is hard to beat. I'm not sure that either takes reservations, so show up early.

Make reservations for ClarkLewis soon; it was recently selected by Oregonian (newspaper) food critics as best restaurant of 2004. Wish I could say I've been there!

My new favorite Italian place is Alba Osteria & Enoteca, located in a close-in Portland suburb. Very good food in a nice, intimate atmosphere. But stay away from the grappa! Cafe Mingo on NW 21st is a little more casual, but also good.

I should give Wildwood another chance. Maybe they've done something with portion sizes. My last time there, I felt like I do when shopping with my wife at Whole Foods; the quality's great, but you pay $100 for a small bag of groceries. Paley's Place, one of my wife's favorites, is better IMO.

Then there's South Park Seafood Grill, Higgins, Giorgio's; the list just keeps goin..

Kim, ironically our group shared the crab cakes and the lettuce wraps...very good! All of us had various entrees and they were all great...but we all passed on dessert. A relative who was in charge of the construction of the restaurant has tried almost all of the food (lucky him...he got to taste things while they were still testing recipes) and he said its all good.

Hi there - was looking up some travel info to the OR coast and saw your posting and couldn't resist a reply!

750ml is a great place...hip ambience, good food, small plates to share (the frites dusted with truffle powder and served with aioli are AMAZING!). The owner is Rena Vatch and she is extremely knowledgable about wine, and very friendly. If you go, ask if she is in and tell her Tom and Joanne and Fiona sent you and she will take care of you! As for the others on your list or mentioned, Henrys is a good option, especially for lunch. Great microbrews and the roquefort fries (see a theme here!) are also to die for. Drop your diet for those! I think it's a little casual though so don't know if I'd recommend for dinner.

DO NOT GO TO WILDWOOD AT ALL!! We moved from NY here 3 years ago...heard all the raves and gave it 3 tries...1 for lunch and 2 for dinner. Overcrowded, poor rude service, a hot noisy dining room and average food. There are so many better dinner places in Portland, and this is expensive too.

I give a definite thumbs up to Paleys (took my sister from Philly 2 weeks ago and she loved it). I have been about 10 times and NEVER had a bad dish. Noble Rot is also a hot place now, and great if you want to sample lots of small plates and OR wines. Higgins is also a sure hit. I personally think South Park is just an average steak and seafood place...nothing special there. Also I know Giorgio has gotten raves but the time I ate there there was a worm in my salad and instead of apologizing, the waiter gave me an "organic produce" lecture, so that kind of irritated me. If you do sushi, the 2 Mio Sushi locations are awesome too.

If you want a truly special splurge, I highly recommend Hurley's in NW or Genoa in SE Portland. Genoa is a prix fixe 6-7 course dinner that is quite a show stopper. Hurley's is new, but I have been twice and very much enjoyed it. The chef is a former NYC fireman who went to culinary school in NY and this is his first restaurant. If you like wild game, foie gras, cream and truffles this is the place for you! You can choose several small plates to share (or to not) and kind of build your own tasting menu. They will also match wines with each dish if you desire.

Oh, one more place that I've tried twice now is Grolla in North Portland. You can have the chef do a special menu for your table (just tell them the things you hate or are allergic to) and they will prepare a unique meal to order and match it with some very generously poured wines. The chef delivered some of the plates himself and not all were the same...for example for the salad course I was served a warm spinach salad with blue cheese and walnuts and my husband was served baby greens with oranges and a rosewater viniagrette. Very nice. And I thought their prix fixe pretty reasonable.

If you're here on the weekend don't miss the Portland Farmer's Market in the South Park Blocks...you'll taste some of the freshest oysters, berries, and mushrooms etc. that you have ever had. Enjoy!

Think I'll scratch Wildwood and keep 750ML regardless of the not so hot responses I received from Chowhound on the place.

Rena Vatch was was quoted in Sunset and the place looks really trendy and fun. ***kim***
