You do have enough time to do something! Depending on when you get there (it would have to be early am) you could go to Pearl Harbor and see the Arizona Memorial. You would want to get over there right away to get a ticket.

Another option is to visit the Iolani Palace, walk along the beach in Waikiki, or you could just go shopping in Honolulu.

mauimo:

Have you tried changing the time of your flight from Maui to Honolulu, to cut your wait-time?

Auntie Maria is correct. There are many, many flights to and from Maui throughout the day.

However, if you are deliberately scheduling a long layover in order to see Oahu as well (we have done this in other cities in order to try some renowned restaurant or shop), that's another thing altogether.

I would take a taxi into Waikiki to the Sheraton Moana Hotel. You can have a drink or meal in one of Honolulu's oldest and most gracious hotels, overlooking the beach at Waikiki. If you are there in the early evening, you can catch the sunset and listen to Hawaiian music on the lanai. From there you can walk along the beach down to Kapiolani Park, which is very close by. You can get a close up glimpse of Diamond Head. If you are feeling adventurous and can leave your bags somewhere, you might even want to hike up Diamond Head. It's not a difficult hike, but it's recommended that you take a small flashlight for a portion of the hike that is through a tunnel. You can swim at the beach at Waikiki, stroll down Kalakaua Avenue, which is the main beachside street through Waikiki, shop at Ala Moana Shopping Center, oneof the largest shopping malls in the U.S. (but also very beautiful). You may need to catch taxis or the bus to save time from place to place, but you'll be able to do a lot in five hours (you'll need to give yourself travel time both ways and time to clear security at the airport).

I second the motion to take a taxi to Waikiki. If you still have time left, stop at Ala Moana Shopping Center (they usually have something cultural happening) which is on the way back to the airport. So is Aloha Tower!

Wherever you go in Hawaii, I Highly Recommend the music of WillieK.com and MakanaLive.com !

I had a guest from the Continental USA.
We adjourned to the La Mariana Yacht Club, which is no more than ten minutes away from the airport, and enjoyed three hours of conversation before moving on. In terms of taxi cost, time, and leisure, this alternative is hard to beat.

Thank you all so much for your help...yes i did do this deliberately. i had a few options: connect from newark through houston, LAX, or oahu, so this option was a no brainer at it was CHEAPER if you can believe that! I get to see two islands for the price of one!
