Hello Ladys & Gent's. My suitcase has been packed for days
I made a list of things we want to do in Maui & how much it cost :0 OMG It adds up fast! I just wonted to run this buy you to see what you'll say...I'v shopped & shopped for better deals, This is what I came up with. Tell me what you think.
West maui parasailing 800ft for $40.00pp?
Jet Ski (waverunners) 1hr $59.95pp?
Reef Dancer Submarine 60min,$26.96pp?
Haleakala ATV Tour 2hr $79.90pp?
Alex air(Chopper ride) Crater/Hana 45 min $134.90pp.
Then the Ocean center $19.00pp.
I Keep hearing that the Old Lahaina's got the best Luau around. I can get tickets for that @ $79.00 per person.Add all that but the parasailing 2 times & I get $792.62 :0:0I wont a real massage but how much will that cost me? I got a room @ the Hotel Hana for $230 OCH! 1 night only.
Air ,Car & Condo came to $1,764.00 is that high low or just right?
Do you think it's unreasonable to stick to my $4,000 budget?
I leave on 5/17/03 spending 1 night in SF $110,00. Then in the early AM we leave.

flight leaves @ 7 something but the airport said be there by 4AM
return 5/25/03
I just wont to say Thanks to all of you for helping me make this dream come true!!
You instilled in me the confidance I needed.
Sincerly GinnyG

GinnyG, your trip sounds wonderful. Boyfriend and I are also heading out on the 18th for Maui (I'm so excited!)...how knows, might run into you somewhere. I don't know about your budget, I have not planned nearly so many activities. Our air, hotel and car total $1,987 (travel for two), and thought that I had gotten really good rates. Looking at your cost of $1,764, looks like you got the better deals. (don't tell my boyfriend)
We have limited ourselves to scheduling the bike trek, the luau and the Road to Hana. We may add a snorkle trip, parasailing, or the helicopter once we get there, so our budget is not nearly what your's is. We will have to budget more for food, however, as we are not staying in a condo.
You should have a great time!
I do have a question, I just checked the weather and it doesn't look great for that week...thunderstorms. Any activities that I should plan in that event? What else is there to do on Maui if it really is thunderstorming while we are there? I don't think that the bike trip, nor the snorkeling would be good ideas in that event? Any suggestions?

Ginney....looks like you did good...on your budget and activities.
In Hana...there is a local gal that does massages....around $40-60 range,or possibly someone at the hotel.
Have not been to the Old Lahaina Luau, but based on what I have read (I have been to 2 luau's)..this is the one on Maui that I would go to.
enjoy...you will love it

GinnyG - My wife, daughter, and I are going to Maui Dec 2 - 11. I have been checking rates for condos, cars, flights. I think you have a great package. We are staying in Kihei flying continental for three of us it is costing $3000, and we still haven't found a car rental. Any suggestions on car rental? I also work for the USPS. Let everyone know how the trip goes.

Just an FYI...
2 tickets for us costed $1525 Continental, but we are flying from Florida, dont know where you other guys are flying from, our OV condo will be $855 for a total of 8 days and I have a car reserved with Budget, $390 for a convertible, all of these were the best deals I could find after many, many hours of research. So our total for air, condo and car is $ 2770...

GinnyG, you might post another question on this site about your flight out of SFO. 3 hours sound like a long time. I just recently flew out of SFO (to Memphis) and we were told to arrive an hour and a half early. We allowed even a little longer, but it didn't take us long at all to get through security (the best I've been through since 9/11). So we sat there for an hour and a half. So you might ask posters who may have flown the same airline.

woohoo! We leave in 6 days too, but we have 2 days in Vegas first thenMaui from the 20-25 and Kauai the 25-30. We are staying at the Kapalua Bay Hotel and then the Princeville, where are you guys staying that are going next week? Maybe we'll see ya there ;-)
I know, the money is going to go fast! We know there is so much more to do than what we are doing but that's okay...we are doing the "must-dos" in our book. For instance we aren't that interested in parasailing, jetskiing, etc...been there done that on other caribbean islands and would rather spend our money elsewhere. I'm sure it will be fun and the scenery different than other places, but we can skip that stuff. Even snorkeling, we are just going to rent snorkel gear at our hotel and go where it's convenient. On Maui most of our $$ is going towards golf, romantic dinners, and the Feast at Lele...The road to Hana and seeing the Sunrise at Haleakala are hardly budget busters. On Kauai, our "big spender" activities are the helicopter tour, a sunset boat tour of the napali coast, golf and surf lessons.
Have fun!

A couple thoughts:
1. Don't waste your money on the Old Lahaina Luau. It's a traditional show, not bad, but the food was mediocre and drinks weak. Go to any luau for 1/2 the price or less - you'll probably enjoy it just as much.
2. Having been to Hawaii a few times in the past 18 months, my favorite thing to do is veg at the beach - snorkel, play in the waves, swim etc...
That is free. Maui's best beach, BigBeach down south, is spectacular. Get a cooler, fill it up with food and drinks, get a few mats and towels, and spend all day there. Parking's free.
3. Do one or two activities. Don't try something everyday. A Hawaiian vacation should be relaxing - driving around all day is not fun. The traffic on Maui can be a real drag.
Relax and enjoy.
Aloha.

I found a weekly rate with Thrifty (www.thrifty.com) for $224.99 for a convertible. With all taxes and paying for the extra drivers, my total rental for 7 days is $311.94, pick up and return at the airport.
I did join Thrifty's blue chip service at the time I made the reservation, so hopefully, this will make the pick-up and return nice and smooth.
This was the abvoslutely best rate that I could find for a convertible. I'll let you all know when I return how it was.

Wow .. sounds great! My sister and I are will be Oahu while you are in Maui. We love Maui!
The best trip we took was snorkeling on Paragon. It was an all day trip to Lanai and we were escorted by spinner dolphins as we approached Lanai. It was wonderful .. but about $135pp.
Have a great time

this is a good topic for me today! we are leaving for Kauai in 7 days! I need a vacation soooo badly...
I am curious what type of rates people have been quoted for interisland helicopter tours and is the extra money to stop at the waterfall worth it?
Also, any info about a luau on Kauai? we have never been to one - is it fun or tourist-y? and over priced?
finally, bogart's mom - thanks for the advance on captain sundown -- we were able to get the lower price from your posting vs the 110 from their website. we owe you a drink!

Ginny: Having a budget in Maui is almost impossible, but... look on net into a place in Kihei that sells discounts on the activities you want to do, Activity Owners Assocation?? We bought card ($30) and used it to save a bunch of money on whale watch, snorket sail to Molokini (overrated), and other things. Road out to Hana is long, cute at first, not much out in Hana... then you have to drive back... my favorite beaches: Makena (big) s. of Wailea, if you're over there, and Napili, next to Kapalu. Enjoy your trip.
