50th birthday in washington, d.c.

looking for a comfortable hotel, in a quiet (not comatose)area, close to the metro, for $200/night. i have read the guide books, searched the internet, and think that the dupont cirle area might be the place to stay.
every time i think i have found just the place, i read a negative review. does anyone have any suggestions? is the topaz hotel a good choice.

Not sure the prices but have you considered the Willard. It is at 14th and Pennsylvania, NW. Beautiful and historic. Also, the area around 22nd and M Streets NW has a few really nice ones, just can't remember the names since they change often.

The Topaz is an excellent choice. Close enough to Dupont so you can easily go outto eat/shop yet at the same time on a very quiet block. One block south is the National Geographic Museum (free). Worth checking out.

Forgot to mention the Topaz is also right next to the Tabard Inn: great food and unbeatable ambience. Always great reviews. It's also a B&B.

Here's a neighborhood map showing both your hotel and the Metro - which is about 3 blocks. Use the metro entrance at the south side of the circle (19th St. & Dupont Circle). Also notice you're very close to Stanislavsky Theater Studio - one of my favorite acting troupes.
