4th of July in Bristol, R.I.

Has anyone ever been to Bristol, Rhode Island for their Fourth of July celebration? Is it all that Yankee magazine has cracked it up to be? Also, is there any good places to stay around there?

I haven't been, but gosh is that a cute little town...so picturesque, I can see it being fabulous at 4th of July. The most we've done there is drive through to the boatyard at Poppasquash Point (even the names are picturesque ). We've got a Bristol sailboat, built in their boatyard and wanted to see the place of her birth. Main St, so quaint, has a red, white and blue stripe for the center line...year round evidently!

Although it's a drive, you could stay in Newport, which is what we did, and we passed quite a few inns and B&Bs on the way in. Sorry, can't be more help, other than to say I can surely see why that would be the quintessential New England 4th of July town.

As a native Rhode Islander, I have been to the parade many times and it is terrific. I think you'll have a hard time at this late date finding a hotel - look more in the Providence area

Thanks M and E, I've heard that the town's cute but I didn't know if it was worth driving from CT and paying for a night's lodging.
Does anyone else have any lodging advice?

Thats not really what I meant StevieG..
Of course I don't mind paying, as long as the event is worthwhile traveling there for. I mean if the celebration's something we can enjoy spending the day and evening doing, then great, sign me up.

There is basically one decent hotel, the Bristol Harbor Inn in town, and some (but not too many) B&Bs. They will all be filled. Newport will also be expensive.

The only "reasonable" lodging choice will be Seekonk, MA. Lots of motels there, just east of Providence. There are a few others in Swansea, MA or Fall River, MA, a little to the east. All short drive to Bristol.

I lived there for 3 years. If you like parades (I don't), then yes, it's worth coming. Participants come from all over New England.
