4th of July in Boston
We need some information on the Boston Pops 4th of July celebration. We would like tips on affordable lodging and some advice on how to get good seats at the Espinlade. Any information on how to get around the area during this time would be helpful.

Hi-there are loads of bed and breakfasts in the Boston area (one on Newbury St. and many in the South End). within walking distance.. As for getting "good seats" for the Esplanade--there is one secret---GET THERE VERY EARLY IN A.M. people camp out early a.m. or the night before... with blankets, chairs and everything imagineable.... no alcoholic beverages allowed... Don't try to drive downtown Boston, but there is a subway...

There are no reserved seats at the Pops concert on July 4th, which is why it's so appealing: it's a concert for everyone, and the man who organizes and funds it would never allow VIP or any other special treatment (except for the disabled). His non-profit organization has its own website: www.july4th.org (I think). The entire city helps make this a safe and easy-to-get-to event, including the subway system. And I've never ever seen such magnificent fireworks...

Cathy, it's great that you're planning ahead for next July 4th! Great suggestions so far, especially for B&B's. You will not get seats on the Oval (the part that you see on TV, and where you can really see the Hatch Shell) unless you devote your entire day to reserving a space. People arrive before 6am to stake their claims. I just don't think it's worth it. Attend the performance the evening before, it's a dress rehursal and you'll see everything except the fireworks. Then, get to the Esplanade in the early afternoon on the 4th and stake out turf with a good view of one of the huge TV screens they now put up. You'll see and hear (sound towers go all the way back to Mass Ave, nearly a mile up the river) just fine, and be in position for the best fireworks you'll ever see anywhere! In the meantime, you can enjoy the city as everything is open that day. Here's a hint...the fireworks barge was anchored just about at Fairfield STreet this year. Anywhere in the Back Bay is primo fireworks viewing and good TV as well. Good luck! Hope you do make it next year. It's amazing!

Just for fun, Cathy, go to Yankee magazine's website (www.newengland.com); their "Picture of the Week" is the back of the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade (where the concert is held).
