40th Bday trip to New Orleans - where to stay?!

I'm planning a REALLY last minute trip to New Orleans for my sister's bday (like next weekend last minute) and need hotel suggestions. Budget is about $200-$250 a night, the nicer the better. Am looking in the Garden District or French Quarter but preferably not right ON Bourbon, or near the end. Also looking for restaurant suggestions for the big birthday night. Thanks!

That came out wrong, I meant - it would be fine if it were near the end of Bourbon St.

Dauphine Orleans is my favorite place to stay in NOLA.

Bayona is a wonderful choice for a special occasion and is literally steps away.

Dauphine looks great!! Was looking at Monteleone or Maison de Ville as well, any thoughts on them?

In June I stayed at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel at the corner of Canal and Bourbon Streets. It is a lovely hotel and our room was updated, large and even had a thermostat instead of those window vents! For dinner I recommend Arnaud's. If I remember correctly the Monteleone is in the heart of French Quarter although I have not stayed there or the other hotels you mention.
