4/21/06 Ladies in Manhattan!
Here it is....
2 40 yr old active ladies up for the weekend to see a play, do a little shopping. Booking everything LAST MINUTE....
Should we fly into LGA, JFK, or NEW?
Considering staying in Airport area hotel. Which airport area is best (safe economical hotels w/easy SAFE access to Manhattan)?
Hotels...give me on or two great, but SAFE economical options w/GREAT location in Manhattan.
Thanks in advance!

Start with a search of this forum. All of your questions have been answered many times, even in the past few days.
That being said ...
Airport ... depends on price, but if price is equal, LGA is by far the best option. Take a taxi or reserve a car service for your trip into Manhattan (www.dial7.com) because ...
Hotel ... Do NOT stay near an airport. Stay in midtown Manhattan, not in Times Square please.
And enjoy!

Do not stay at Airport hotel.
Get into the city and stay either mid town or, (sorry Gekko - if you want to be in Times Square, do that too. It's noisy and touristy and crazy, but perhaps that is what you are looking for.
There is a Sheraton Towers and a Sheraton Manhattan (across the street from each other) not far from Times Sq - and many, many others but hard to say not knowing your budget.
Gekko is right, in the search bar in this forum type things like "girls weekend nyc" or "nyc hotels" and see what comes up, there are lots of good recommendations
For theater tickets last minute, there are ticket booths but you can stand in line a loong time, unless you go down to the Seaport tix booth where there is usually little or no line, and if nice day you cuold walk that area (bodies exhibition) and other things to see - or try this web page
http://home.nyc.rr.com/frugaltheatergoe/
it has lots of info on tix buys and maybe you can avoid waiting in any line at a tix booth.
You are as safe in NYC as in any city. Keep your pocketbook close by and your wits about you and you will be fine. Whereve ryou stay, ask them directions and safe way back at night and they will direct you bus, T, cab, etc based on where you will be..
have fun. shop in soho. eat and drink everywhere.
see what's up at some of the museums. If weather is nice, walk thru Central Park....and more !

LGA is closest to the city but fly into whichever one is the cheapest airfare. Do NOT, repeat, do NOT stay at an airport hotel. Why, you ask? Well the hotels around JFK are pretty awful AND you will spend endless time and money getting to/from Manhattan. If you have to eat near the hotel, you will be pretty limited to the hotel itself.
There are slightly better hotel options near LGA and EWR but EWR is still not very close and there's only 1 hotel near LGA that's within walking distance of a subway (sorry can't remember which one).
If you MUST stay outside Manhattan try the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City. It's next to a PATH train (like a subway) that will take you into Manhattan.
If this trip is for this weekend, try this special at the Shoreham
http://hotels.travelzoo.com/new-york-hotels/234839
or, if you don't mind possibly sharing a bed, try bidding on Priceline (go to betterbidding.com or biddingfortravel.com if you don't know how Priceline works) Bid for a 4* hotel in midtown east, midtown west or upper midtown/Cental Park.
or, check quikbook.com

Do NOT stay at an airport hotel.
Staying at Newark would be taking your life into your hands.
Any money you save would be eaten up quickly by commuting costs and it is a big PIA.
NYC is the safest large city in the world.
No such animal as economical. Plan on paying about $200 per night for a moderate hotel. You may find something cheaper on hotwire or priceline.
As Gekko said search this forum.

Should have added, if you're going to do the Hyatt in Jersey City, you should obviously fly into EWR (Newark).
Radio City apartments is a very good budget option for a theater trip but their cheapest rooms ($150) seem to be booked most weekends. radiocityapartments.com
The Sheraton Suites on the Hudson (in Weehawken NJ) has been available on quikbook for ~$150/night with prepayment. Not a terrible option if you can't find something in Manhattan. There's a ferry down the road that gets you across the river but it's $5/person per trip (add $20/day for 2 people with only 1 daily roundtrip).

Most hotel neighborhoods in NYC are safe and near public transportation. I agree with the priceline suggestion. ANywhere in midtown South or midtown East is good. Midtown West is fine if you want to be in the times sq area (I find it crowded and noisy with lost of touristy & chain restaurants but it is safe and conveneient).
WHat's your hotel budget. People can make better suggestions of they know what you want to spend.
